Today marks the passing of a river friend, John Hartford in 1986 if I am not mistaken. I met him in 1976 on the Mississippi Queen where he did a concert for the crew out on the bow one evening. At that time I did not know who he was although I quickly learned. Rest in peace John.
Hartford Passing
I believe he passed in mid-2001. In any case, he and his music will live on for many years to come. He left behind an incredible legacy!
Thanks Taylor, You are correct. I missread the article. The date was for a photo taken of him.
John's memory on the TWILIGHT
The entertainer on the Monday segment of the TWILGHT trip sang John's Delta Queen Waltz, which of course brought back memories of both John and the DQ. As most know, John stood many a pilot watch on the JULIA BELLE SWAIN and I believe also on the TWILIGHT in her early years. He was also a watchman on the NATCHEZ on her race trip in 1982 - many a story has been told of those wonderful times by the NATCHEZ crew.
John left a tremendous legacy not only to those of us who were his longtime friends, but to many younger folks who follow his music. In recent months, it has been fun to assist Sheila Nichols with the soon-to-be-released documentary on John's life. The DVD will make its debut in various venues, one of which will be the Howard Steamboat Museum on a date to be announced.
As many know, John caught the "river bug" when he was a student of Miss Ruth Ferris, who taught fifth grade for 35 years at the Community School, a private institution in St. Louis. Sheila and her colleagues have left no stone unturned in their quest for images and other material which will make this a spectacular production!
