It is heartening to see there is so much interest in the Belle of Louisville as expressed on Steamboats.org. The Waterfront Development Corporation (WDC) is the proud operator of this National Historic Landmark. Allow us, on behalf of WDC, to clear up some issues to interested parties as well as pointing out changes that have occurred since the Belle has come under our stewardship.

All financial operations of WDC and the Belle are totally separate. WDC does not charge, nor has ever charged, the Belle any wharfage fees. WDC receives no money whatsoever from the Belle’s financial operations. The employees of the Belle fully participate in all employer benefits of Louisville Metro Government, which had been lost under the previous operator. WDC’s Board of Directors is very supportive of managing the Belle, and is comprised of business leaders with an affinity for improving Louisville.

With regard the physical condition of the Belle, the following have taken place since WDC took over: a fully handicap accessible elevator replaced the often inoperable wheelchair lift to allow for access from the main deck to the ballroom deck. The ballroom deck is fully air conditioned with funding we secured from the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, which increased sales and charter opportunities. Along with the air conditioning, improvements in appearance to the ballroom deck were completed, resulting in a much more handsome venue. WDC obtained funding to replace the leaking hurricane deck, which has needed replacing for several years. Finally WDC was approached by Atlas Machine with an offer to provide a donation of labor and materials to renovate the Belle’s antique engines and make other improvements to the machinery in the engine room. The value of this in kind donation is in excess of $80,000. This engine work has resulted in more efficient operation and in fuel savings.

Another result of the Atlas Machine donation is the designation by Preservation Louisville listing the Belle of Louisville a “preservation success” stating “This fall celebrating its 100th birthday and just restored her engine, we recognize the signature value of this important community treasure, and acknowledge the Waterfront Development Corporation for its continued restoration and maintenance.” Preservation Louisville, Inc.

Waterfront staff is also working very diligently planning the Centennial Festival of Riverboats to celebrate the Belle’s upcoming 100th birthday. We hope you’ll visit Centennial Festival of Riverboats to learn more about the exciting festivities and purchase cruise tickets to help us celebrate!

Sincerely,

David K. Karem
