Steamboats.org has a new feature that might be interesting for all of you having a Facebook account: As an option, you can now log into the Steamboats.org message board with your Facebook account credentials.

Just click on the Facebook logo button (which you'll only see when you're not logged in already!) and follow the instructions. As you are having a steamboats.org username already, please do not choose a new username but click on the link below the username form field; this way you can connect your existing steamboats.org account with the Facebook account.

You can use both login methods at any time, just to your liking. You're actual user account at steamboats.org will not be deleted or changed in any way. Facebook login is just an additional option.

The advantage of doing it with the Facebook account is that if you're logged into Facebook already, you don't have to retype username and password for steamboats.org again.

If you like, give it a try and let me know what you think. Also, please drop me a note when you're facing difficulties using the new feature.

One more note: Don't be afraid, Facebook is NOT sending your password to steamboats.org in any way, so your Facebook password will be absolutely safe. Facebook, technically speaking, is just telling steamboats.org who you are (your username) and that you're logged in correctly. (for the technically curious: the technology behind this is called Facebook Connect).

Franz

P.S.: Please be aware: Don't try typing in your Facebook username and password in the regular steamboats.org login form; it won't work. Use the Facebook logo button instead (which you only see when you're not logged in!).

Facebook, Twitter,etc.

I know you are providing this as an option for those on Facebook, but as you probably know already, there are some of us who aren't going any farther than emailing and posting on this board, so please don't eventually upgrade this so we dinosaurs get left out. A couple of steamboating colleagues privately take pleasure in the 'demise' of .org. I'm sure many of our posters/lurkers are using Facebook and other social things rather than posting here, and that's fine. But unlike those couple of illwishers, I see .org as still very vibrant and a vital source for steamboat history and information. Many not so shy lurkers have thanked us for contributing to this site. So please don't do anything to knock us 'antisocialnetworkers' off the site.

No reason to worry at all. It's quite the opposite: I'm using Facebook (and potentially other services in the future) as additional features, not as a replacement.

Being present at Facebook and offering this new feature will bring MORE users to steamboats.org, not less. And it'll make it easier for Facebook to use steamboats.org users, so they'll come more frequently.

By the way: The number of steamboats.org users are steadily increasing and have almost doubled over the last two years. So there is no such a thing as "demise" here at all 🙂
