Hey all,
I just found an old copy of the Middle Ohio River Chapter of the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen news letter, the Riverview. In it was a dictionary of MISSISSIPPI QUEEN terms penned rather tongue in cheek for some of the calamatious events of her first UMR cruise. Since this has come up on here several times over the years and yet to be posted in it's entirety, I thought I would post the old document for all to get a little winters laugh from!
You may want to download this to your computer so you can enlarge it in what ever photo software you use.
Beware, this is about the funniest thing ever to make it to print in the Riverview ever! Get ready for laughs!
Enjoy!
Travis

According to the Riverview, it was penned by an MQ crew member. I wasn't a crew member in 1979. Little did I know how far that satirical effort would travel, but I have to admit it was one of my best 'literary' efforts. That first UMR trip by the MQ was filled with calamities which were impossible to ignore. If only we still had the MQ to pick on today!
Judy,
We have discussed this several times over the years and when I found it, I just HAD to post it here for all to enjoy. I sincerely hope people understand why this is funny. The MISS-Q had several calamaties on her first UMR cruise and this was such a funny way to look at it. It in no way was penned to say anything bad about any person or the boat itself. I can't believe I found it after all these years!
Wait...did you just publicly admit to this after all these years?!?
Yes........
The DQ followed the MQ up the UMR by a week. I was onboard so I was able to revisit the various sites of the MQ calamities. We passed below Clinton, where DQ calliopist David Tschiggfrie seranaded the MQ with Who's Sorry Now, and the MQs calliopist Capt. Gabe replied with The Old Gray Mare. It was a fun exchange, and it certainly was exciting for the passengers to see the sister boat underway.
These are clever! I especially like "Old Gray Mare" and "Pilothouse". I saw a reference to toilets under "Whistle", but nothing specifically about exploding/back-flushing toilets during the maiden trip. I seem to remember a story about that happening.
the terlets....
Yes, that was the story on the toilets on the maiden voyage, but by the 1979 UMR trip that situation was fixed, although the whistle still didn't match the size of the boat.
