Steamboating colleagues:
The U.S. Mail person delivered a lushly illustrated printed brochure titled, 'Michael Blaser: Painter Of The Working River.' Two fine photos of Michael at work in his studio and aboard last fall's Tall Stacks event painting on the deck of Str. NATCHEZ. As official artist for Tall Stacks, his print run for the event was sold out. That's no small accomplishment.

Two dandy new paintings are 'Making Tow' depicting the DELTA QUEEN and a 'line boat' with barges in the Ohio River at Cave-in-Rock, Illinois period 1980s. 'Three Ladies of Charleston' depicts the Kahawha River at Charleston, W.Va. with MADISON COAL CO's M.V. LAWSON HAMILTON JR., excursion boat P.A. DENNY and the stern wheeler MOMMA JEANNE. This slick, professional production also carries 'The Cold River,' 'The Moonlight Above Memphis.' I don't know how Mike does it--but he does. Any of you attending Tall Stacks last fall and missed Michael's fine art show here in tandem with model builder John Fryant missed a dandy.

The USPS does a better job delivering that than the Reflector, as I got my copy a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately I have no room for any more of Michael's large prints - I have 8 -, so I'm trying to get some of the 11x14s he advertises on Steamboat Mikey's, but so far no reply from Gay on those. His studio is certainly interesting, down in his basement, and his home is filled with copies of each of his paintings, very impressive as you see it upon entering the house. How many Blaser prints do you own, Dale?

Hi, Judy and gang:
Glad the USPS is more prompt on your end. It's crazy how mail languishes at the post office here. Recent REFLECTOR issues arrived at mother's house and other destinations within blocks or a few miles and mine came at the last possible minute--in a soggy envelope.

A Blaser rendition of 'Port of Cincinnati - Tall Stacks, 2006' came here via Santa Claus from the family. I shuffle my feet, look down at the floor wishing I had more. This house isn't big by any stretch of the imagination and wall space groans with steamboat photos by Paul Briol, 'Andy' Lodder, Fred Way. Old English ship prints, ocean liners, mounted fabrics, steamboat certificates... Takes time to dust carefully each week. In years to come I guess we'll let the nephews and nieces take what they want, if they want it. I'm always amazed here in town to walk in an office or business and see Mike's works looking down.

I've a side question. Who cranked up the calliopes on the DQ and BELLE for the race yesterday? Not a peep about any of it here in Cincinnati. DQ should have arrived at the Public Landing this AM.

Cheers,
R. Dale Flick

Making Tow is one of my fav Blaser paintings, but he's got that DELTA QUEEN stern pretty far out in the river. Reckon that was the artist's way of showing more of the boat? But we, here at the Rabbit Hash Shipyard, love his work and ain't complaining ...just wondering.

Hi dot.org gang,

My favorite Blaser print is the one with the m/v Standard pushing her two gasoline barges out of the mouth of the Kanawha River......oh wait, that's only a Blaser painting in my head.

I'm like the rest and wish I had more Blaser prints. Maybe someday when I build that nice big house on a barge I've been dreaming about I'll have wall space for enough of Mike's river marvelpieces.
