Missing our Delta Queen Thanksgiving

For the last few years we've spent Thanksgiving week with our second family on the Delta Queen so these days seem awfully empty. Trying to think positively I realize we need to be grateful for many things.
I'm thankful to the travel gods who put us on our first Delta Queen trip in 2003 and to the health gods who made more trips possible.
I'm thankful for the crew, both seen and unseen, known and unknown.
I'm thankful for all those people working to Save the Delta Queen, always coming up with new ideas and pushing the rest of us to keep working and believing.
I'm thankful for the individuals on this message board who gladly share their knowledge and memories with those of us born in the mountains and far from any river. And of course I'm thankful for the man who started this board.
I'm thankful for the veteran repeaters who made us so welcome and included us as "old-timers" even when we weren't. You know who you are!!
And I'm thankful for paddlewheel rainbows, sunsets and misty mornings.
Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving with the hopes that next year will see us back on our beloved boat.

Ginnie,

Doesn't seem like Thanksgiving with out the boat, does it? I will be with my family this year and I feel strangely out of place with the idea. I guess the 7 years I spent on the boats became habit!

Ahhh, Turkey day on the DQ...Can think of only one negative with that, there were no Dagwood sized turkey sandwichs as a snack...Deb and I only did Thanksgiving once on the DQ, and it was wonderful...I pray there can be more in the future, on ANY steamboat....

The Krause's also wish all our Steamboatin' and River friends a Happy Thanksgiving, including our 'second' family, the crews of two boats that I can think of...

...also including the winter transplanted to Florida/missing the 14 inches of snow/18 degrees, "yes, I know it's in the 70's down there" couple from New York...and yes, You know who you are!

Thanksgiving day 1969 was a cruising day from Memphis. The DQ spent Thanksgiving Eve tied up at Waterways Marine, foot of Beale St. The galley at that time had located on the Starboard side a rather large 6 door (compartment) refrigerator. Three doors across the top, three doors bottom. Often there was something left in one of the compartments, I suppose, for bait for the crew midnight snack.

On this particular night the Chef has prepared a suckling pig, complete with apple in mouth, cherries for eyes reposing on a silver platter in the top right had compartment.

Seems Vic Tooker and the Hostess were out on the town and returned late into the night. The dynamic duo passed through the galley and sure 'nuff the hostess opened the top right door only to let out a blood curdling scream "there's a dog in there...".

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Thats exactly the kind of story I love and what I mean about this board. Thanks, Jim, for sharing.
And Bruno, last night it was 32 degrees down here - but then we're not shoveling anything - or nothing white anyway.

Ginnie: What a beautiful posting! Like you, one of my MANY blessings for which I'm thankful is the friendships that have been formed because of this medium which is so generously provided by Franz and Carmen. One can never have too many river friends and among the HIGH-lights of 2008 for me was having you and Ralph visit the steamboat museum. Come back SOON -- and have a blessed Thanksgiving!

Keep the faith and keep up steam!
