It was my pleasure and privilege Monday evening to be the guest speaker for the monthly dinner meeting of the Louisville Chapter of The Propeller Club. Had a fine meal and lots of fun fellowship at the Knights of Columbus Hall on River Road as a FULL moon illuminated the beautiful Ohio. My talk was augmented by the showing of Jimmy Reising's excellent DVD, "The Howard's and the Boats They Built" - which is what we now use as a splendid orientation prior to mansion tours.

The national convention of The Propeller Club will take place in Louisville during the week of October 14-17, 2014, the same time period as the Centennial Celebration for our beloved BELLE of LOUISVILLE, with a special exhibit, several events and numerous tours hosted at the HSM. Gonna be a BUSY (but FUN!) week to be sure!

Am PLANNING to be there. Any tips or suggestions? (Beyond what's on the web site, which is of little help.) Enquiring minds, coming from a long distance, want to know. What should be done right away?

The Middle Ohio River Chapter of S&D (MOR) has a block of rooms in the downtown Louisville Marriott Courtyard at 2nd and Main reserved for it's members on Friday and Saturday nights. The price is $120.00 per room, per night and includes parking. Also we have already purchased a small number of cruise only tickets for the Saturday morn harbor trip on the Birthday Gal herself. The breakfast buffet offered on that trip is already sold out, so we were not able to get tickets for the food and cabin seating! MOR members will have first dibs on the group hotel space and steamboat tickets. There will be more information in next month's RIVERVIEW.

Thanks for that info. Will have to find something a tiny bit cheaper, so will shop around. Do you think someone is just buying up stuff on speculation?

Prices

Better do a little seining sp? for gold before coming over. The boat prices are $37 or so for sightseeing trips, and even my bottom line Marriott Towne Place is charging $169 a night, up from a usual $95 or so. Maybe prices will go down closer as TAs return their unused holdings...

We at Midwest Riverboat Buffs have moved our 2014 fall meeting in Keokuk, IA to the first weekend of October to accomodate our members if they wanted to attend the celebrations in Louisville as well!

Gold in them thar hills

"Panning, dredging, or sleusing" it's called when looking for gold in a stream, but not very profitable when water is frozen. Some people have pretty good success at that, but you have to know what you are doing, like anything else. So we are mining tourists, as we know all about that. Anyhow, I have already found 3 B&B's that are much cheaper, via a club I'm in, so will give them a call right away. Looks like I'd better get on the ball.

JoAnn Schoen is the mastermind who got MOR a rate of $120.00 a night, including parking, only two blocks away from the venue! She started early working on getting rooms last summer. Seeing that for a room over in Jeff it's $169.00 a night, I'd say you can't beat $120.00 with a stick.

Cha-ching!

Since I can only afford one trip to the Midwest next year (unless I win the lottery), I think I'll go for S&D in Sept.
