The AQ departed St. Louis around 10:15 on Wednesday. I was not able to stay around that late. I have no idea why they left so late. They prepared to depart, sent the wheel in reverse, played a few tunes on the calliope, and then stopped. They kept the wheel running slow ahead after that.
I've included some photos of the AQ, on it's first visit to St. Louis in 3 years. One thing I would say is that I don't like the extensive use of the dark blue color. It's sickening and makes me think of the River Explorer. Too much blue. They've got a nicer looking MAL logo on the boat, unlike the awful one on the Delta Queen.

Nice photos
I can't wait until she makes her way up the Ohio to Point Pleasant. The last time I saw this boat during the day was in July 2001. I did get to see her for about 3 minutes (barely) through the trees in 2003 at about 10 PM, so I could only see lights.
She will also be in town during the Point Pleasant regatta this year, I really don't think that was planned, but just a coincidence.
Glad to see the AQ running again on the upper rivers. 😀

After we booked our trip on the AQ, which would have put us in Point Pleasant on Sunday July 8, we were notified that MAL had changed the schedule set up by DQSC and we would be in Point Pleasant on July 7. I thought it was planned until I discovered that the 'regatta' organizers had no idea.
Personnally I was looking forward to something like the Ohio River Sternwheel festival, complete with races or something.
Nick, any chance that we could meet up on the seventh?
Darin,
I gave up and left around 8:30, glad I didn't keep waiting for the departure. I agree on the color-too much blue. I will also say this, I politely asked the person watching the stage some questions, like are they refueling, ect. Very RUDE. I also asked if he would kindly take my photo in which he reluctantly took my camera, pointed, and then said, "Too much of an angle!" Handed me the camera back and went back to being his "cheerful" self. Now, I understand everyone has a job to do, but I would think that someone showing interest in the boat, company, and so forth, would be a welcome thing. So much for thinking...
Hey Darin, I worked on the AQ for about 18 months back when DNC had her. I think a red white and blue motif is a good idea, but from the photos I've seen here, the shade of blue and red MAL chose doesn't really match the colors of the U.S. flag. Here's an idea. MAL supplies the paint and a free cruise for all .orgs and we'll repaint the AQ for them in return. Oh yeah, and they supply all the Abita Amber!
So, you were there, too. We probably passed each other without knowing. I was getting bored too, so I watched the parking lot idiots who standing there waxing their cars. They could have waxed mine. I'm not sure how good of a job collecting parking fees is, but one guy had a pretty new looking Mercedes-Benz.
I bet the stage deckhand was "kind". How about that signboard, with lie that says that "returning members of the PSSOA are welcome to visit..." We know that is not true. You have to be on the list to board.
The various people who filled that guard position didn't look all that friendly or interested to be standing there. Apparently, they've never heard of "firm, but friendly". Later, probably after you left, some man jumped on the stage, acting like he wanted to deliver something in a bag. McDonalds, perhaps. The tall skinny guy ran down the stage and shushed him off. It was already sitting about three feet off the levee at that point. The same deckhand stood on shore, talking with bystanders for another half hour, while we all waited for the much delayed departure. Maybe this guy wasn't the one you encountered. You probably encountered the older one with facial hair.
Darin, I watched the waxing too...that wasn't as bad as when they decided to play their music a bit too loud. Actually I was right across the way sitting on the concrete under the chain-rails...yes, the man I encountered was an older fellow...maybe he didn't like the shirt I was wearing...it was an old DQSCO deck hand shirt! 🙂
Nice pics Darin!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you were the one wearing the DQSC shirt, then I saw you. I walked right by once or twice. I figured you for ex-crew, along with the other people who were by you. Yes, the music the car waxers were playing was a bit loud. They, of course, thought nothing of it. What a great image for the riverfront visitors.
Yep, that was me. I also wasn't prepared to get "buzzed" by the helicopter...scared the sugar outta me. Can't figure out why they have to be on the levee and not somewhere else. Have you or anyone else heard any more discussions for the re-development of the riverfront? It's looking more and more awful by the day.
Yes, let's have a repainting party
I don't have a problem with red, white, and blue, either. But, I think it should be done a little more tastefully. The big blue area on the first deck would be the first thing I would re-paint during our painting party. I'd also re-paint the gingerbread on the posts from blue to white. The rest of the changes could stay, I guess. It's funny that MAL would paint in those colors, since they are trying to de-emphasize the patriotic aspect of their "majestic" line. They took the golden eagle off the DQ pilothouse, much to the dismay of many people. Maybe something more suitable will replace that ugly MAL sticker soon.
Count me in on the Re-Painting Party!
