Knowing that we have a very busy bunch on this board, I thought it wise to give you advance notice: the MOR and RRR are joining together on a cruise on the TWILIGHT riverboat on Aug. 14/15, 2011. That is a Sunday/Monday trip. MOR has taken this trip several times in the past, and the RRR's first trip together was on the TWILIGHT two years ago. This trip begins in LeClaire Iowa, goes to Dubuque and returns to LeClaire the second day. LeClaire is on I-80 just above the Quad-Cities, so for those coming from MOR territory, you'd just take I-74, which merges with I-80 here - a simple drive! Chances are good that either pre or post cruise there would be an open house here at the Middle Upper Mississippi River Museum(with cookies and Planters Punch), and that the evening in Dubuque would probably include a filmfest of steamboating led by David Tschiggfrie. And of course, while in LeClaire, one can tour the LONE STAR, the last operating steam sternwheel towboat on the UMR. So get out next year's datebook and pencil in these dates. More info later, but the group rate will be approximately $319 per person for the 2 day cruise.

Pre or post cruise lodging

Lodging in LeClair includes the Holiday Inn Express which is on the river, and the Comfort Inn and the Super 8 which both overlook the river from the same high bluff as the Iowa Visitors' Center. All of these are just a few minutes down river from the Twilight.

lodging

And they have special rates if you tell them you are taking the TWILIGHT cruise. There is also a new restaurant in town, the Bierstube, not that anyone would be interested in that kind of thing!

Thanks for the information and good advance planning Judy. I'll be sure not to schedule River Ramblings #7 for that weekend!

Either two weekends before or two weekends after and I'll be able to make it for once!

Welcome to the board Kevin! Judy is the coordinator for the TWILIGHT trip and can provide all the details about the event, which is open to any and all who are interested.

River Ramblings is a program series that I started at the Howard Steamboat Museum in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The annual gathering (held in summer) is mainly to offer a river related lecture/seminar. Thus far topics have included the history of the Str. IDLEWILD/AVALON, showboating, Streckfus Steamers, river music, remembrances of a marine architect/riverman, and the working river, presented by a towboat captain. The full weekend of activities also includes museum tours, cruises on the Str. BELLE of LOUISVILLE, a group meal at a waterfront restaurant and a fellowship time for sharing photos, slides, etc. This year we also had a "Riverboat Rummage Sale" of books, t-shirts, pictures, and other memorabilia. Information is always posted well in advance on the museum website, which is available by clicking on Howard Steamboat Museum - Home Page as well as on this forum. ALL are WELCOME and we would be pleased to have you join us!

If you'd like more information, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]

Thanks for your interest and we look forward to seeing you!

Explaining the acronyms

Kevin, I guess we just take it for granted that people know what we mean by acronyms. First of all, the TWILIGHT trip is open to anyone who is interested. MOR stands for the Middle Ohio River chapter of S&D (Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen, but you don't have to be a son or daughter thereof). They have a membership dues, but anyone is welcome at their meetings and trips. RRR stands for Rambling River Rats, and this is a totally unorganized group whose purpose is to take riverboat trips. Many of the 'members' are displaced DELTA QUEEN passengers, but we come from any interest in the river. Our first group trip was aboard the TWILIGHT two years ago, then both last year and this year we rode the SPIRIT OF PEORIA on her trip to St. Louis. Quite a few people are in both groups. The main purpose of the RRR is to get enough people on the same trip so as to get a group discount. Please send me your email address so I can send you the particulars once they are determined. For detailed info on the TWILIGHT itself, check their website: twilightriverboat.com You're welcome to 'join' this outfit of river fans. [email protected] One more explanation: the Middle Upper Mississippi River Museum is my house - I have an extensive collection of steamboat memorabilia and have an open house whenever a group comes near Rock Island - it forces me to clean up the place every few years! Hope to see you next August on the TWILIGHT!

Kevin,

I'm the President of MOR, and we would love to have you join our group of one hundred souls whom love the river and related travel. To join MOR (Middle Ohio River Chapter of the Sons & Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen) it's only $5.00 a year, but you must belong to the parent organization, The Sons & Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen (S&D) which costs $30.00. Both MOR and the parent organization have wonderful publications that are being currently revived. The S&D REFLECTOR is a professionally published magazine that will delight any river enthusiast, and MOR sends out THE RIVERVIEW for both a look back in time and forward for the group. If you're interested check out S&D's website or send an e-mail to me via this website.

Next year MOR will be meeting during the weekend of April 8-10 in Vevay, Indiana. Noted river scholar Jack Custer will give the key note talk on the rise and fall of steam towboating on the Mississippi River System. This is being held in conjunction with the Celebration of 200 Years of Steam Navigation on the Western Rivers. Then as noted, next August 14th. MOR joins forces with the RRR on the TWILIGHT.

I'm planning on being there. I heard about the trip through Frank (who I know from the ocean liner world). I'm very excited about the idea...having missed out on the DQ, but had some great times on the NATCHEZ and the BELLE OF LOUISVILLE, as well as meeting several more of the river inclination on the BELLE OF CINCINNATI in July, and am looking forward to the closest thing to overnight riverboating I'm getting in America today on TWILIGHT.

Flights to Quad Cities from New York aren't out of control, either, as I was fearing.

TWILIGHT and MLI

Glad to hear you'll be joining us Greg. Our airport, MLI, has 4 major competing airlines, with fairly decent rates especially on longer flights.

It will be a great time, Greg. I'm glad that you are planning on making another muddy water boat trip, and getting the salt spray washed off. I guess that it will be up to us to bring the Pol Acker though!
