In 72 hours we will be in Cinci begining our trip. We have looked at the listings of shore trips and found them to be rather expensive for a group of our size.

With the Regatta happening while we are there (Point Pleasant WV), I am assuming that there will be things to see and do near the landing. Is the steamboat museum close enough to walk? (In other words, equal to or less than the distance from the Ohio River Museum to the Marietta landing).

The less mobile members of our group will be saving their energy for Marietta, but I am sure that the kids will want to get off the boat, if they are awake, and I don't want to set out on a walk and discover that by the time we get somewhere we have to turn around and go back to make it back on the boat for departure.

Hey Bruce,

The river museum is very close to where the American Queen will dock, and about a 5 - 10 minute walk (at most) from the boat. Not sure if you have been to Point Pleasant riverfront before, but it is very nice, one of the best I have seen. The riverfront is very similar to the Cincinnati serpentine wall. There are many ways to get to the top, ramps, stairs... ect. 🙂

At the top of the hill, there will be of course a flood wall, and beyond that is main street. Along main street there are some things to see, but the river museum is very nice and is closer to the boat than the Marietta museum is in Marietta.

With the regatta happening during the AQ's stop, the streets will be crowded (I am guessing) more so than normal. Around here, the past few years, the regatta has basically been a boring street fair, and there weren't boat races or anything like that. I am hoping with the AQ here, it will be different this year.

Here is our town's website: http://www.pointpleasantwv.org/

Here is a view from the Mississippi Queen's wing bridge so you can see riverfront and flood wall:

Click this link on virtual earth maps, and you will see a section of the area where the boat will dock, and where the river museum is.

once the map comes up, you can see the red marker where the river museum is. The marker with the #2 on it is about where the AQ will dock. 😉 If the boat follows the same pattern as the last couple of times she came here on the upbound, she arrived around 8 AM - 9 AM, and departed around 5 PM so you will have plenty of time. 😉

Hope this helps, if you have any more questions please ask.

Bruce......there's a very unusual old house which is only about 2 blocks walking distance from where the boat ties up that has always been open to the passengers of the DQ. You won't find it on any brochures, but it is definitely worth a visit. The house is all tile and wood paneling (even the ceilings) and antique furnishings, built in the early 1900's. It overlooks the river, in fact, you can see the DQ right out the back window. Give it a try.....the last time I was there in 2005 it had just changed owners, but they were happy to have passengers go through the house.
Walk to the main street (1/2 block), turn right, walk 1 block, turn right again and you'll see it straight ahead on the right. I'm inclosing a couple of pictures.....the view from the street, and a shot of one of the rooms.
Enjoy

Paul,

Yes, the house is still there and if the owners are home they still let us through. Last year they were working on the roof when we were in there (I was on the MISSISSIPPI QUEEN last time I was there) in November. From what I am seeing it looks like they are putting alot of money into it.

What I have never seemed to get from anyone up there is a history of the building. It is definately of mid 1800's vintage, if not earlier. Bet there is a great story in there somwhere!
