All you steamboat buffs and buffettes in the St. Louis area be sure to come down to the Riverfront in the afternoon on July 4th. The DELTA QUEEN is due in about 3:00 p.m. There are a half dozen or so buffettes planning on being there to welcome her. Be sure to make yourself known to us (Kevin and Darin and anyone else). We plan on being in plain view with DELTA QUEEN apparel on. Since it's suppose to be a scorcher of a day I plan on wearing a large red hat with purple flowers (from my Red Hat Lady days). Hope to see you in St. Louie!
Jo Ann, I am going to try and make it! I would love to meet all of you since I have never had the pleasure of a cruise...I have been cruising vicariously through all of you!
Not so hot this year
Actually, it's not supposed to be all that hot. So, you won't be sweating like crazy in the shade. Of course, there's always a chance at the traditional pop-up "where'd that come from" thundershower that seems to arrive on that very day each year.
I'm going to try to be there that day. I've got a full day ahead of me. I'm headed to the annual Veiled Prophet Parade, 130 years strong, at 10:00 AM. And, I'm headed to the baseball game that evening. In between I hope to do some steamboat watching.
Steaming to St Louie
The latest information from the Navigation Dept of the DQ is: We will be docking near the Eads bridge above the North Leg of the Arch. The access point is Gate B for this area. We are leaving Cape Girardeau at 1 PM and should arrive in STL by 3PM the 4th or maybe before if conditions are right and we don't have to wait for many Tows coming down stream. This is the only time I have had a signal to send this info. It will be gone till we get to STL. So no communication from the river for a while.
John
Have a great July 4th in St. Louis!!
I hope the fair is a bit better than last year when there was nearly nothing anymore. At least one steamboat will be there (none in 2008)!

No DQ at 3:00 PM
Well, it is now past 3:00 and there's no Delta Queen to be found. The only thing that's occurring right now is the always expected, but rarely predicted thunderstorm. I hope Joann and the steamboaters have umbrellas. Check out the radar to see how localized the storm is. Without fail, it always hits downtown on July 4. Here at my home, south of St. Louis at UMR 167.5, it is not raining but is sunny. The radar shows that the rain is more widespread, but that is just ground clutter. I can hear the rumble of thunder upriver.
No steamboats have passed my vantage point, and it is a two hour upriver cruise from here. So, unless my onsite sources at the Fair are reporting bad information, there's no DQ arrival until after 5:00 PM today.
By the way, Fair St. Loser is just as small and lousy as it was last year. I wouldn't look for next year's fair to be much better, either. But, there will be one steamboat in attendance next year. It is the American Queen. It will arrive on July 4 and disembark passengers on July 5. The DQ and MQ are elsewhere.
DQ arrived
After the baseball game (we won!), I ventured to the Riverfront to see the fireworks. The DQ was wrapping up an evening calliope concert. So, they did arrive, but were parked outside of the Fair zone, north of Eads Bridge, approximately where the former Gordon C Greene lies in rest. Hopefully the bridge wasn't in the way of them seeing the fireworks.
Hey, I hear that the DQ won the 2007 Steamboat Race... of one.
Queen was in on the 4Th
We arrived in St Louis on the 4Th at Noon Jazzoo at the caliope as per needed. Wow what a rain shower was at the Arch when it open up.The Eagle was put on board in Memphis. Wow what a sight to see her on board. They took her off in St.Loius to fix her and as i can see she was put back up soon after.
Ah, that sneaky DQ. We were told the arrival would be at 3:00 PM and the boat arrived at 12:00. So much for steamboat watching. As I figured, my Fair St. Louis contacts were off the mark. They reported no boat at 2:30, when it might have been there. The boat docked upriver from Eads Bridge, which might have been the reason for not being noticed. Thanks for the update.

Actually, we landed below the Eads Bridge just before noon, and stayed right there. Great view of the fireworks! I played the calliope just prior to the display, and toward the end of Cyndi Lauper's concert. Hope she liked it, though she may have been louder....
I liked the calliope concert, even if Cyndi didn't. I guess from my angle, it looked like the boat was above Eads Bridge. Hope everyone had a good time.
