In case some of the members here also ride rail cruises with GrandLuxe, it looks like those days are over, at least until a new owner comes along. Here is part of a notice sent to customers that was posted on a rail forum today. Note that they don't promise any refunds to those with deposits or pre-paid tickets. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

"Parts of a letter that went out today to people booked for 08/09 trips:

GrandLuxe Rail Journeys will cease operations with the
return of the train to Tacoma on Thursday morning, August 28,2008. We are financially unable to continue operations.

Unfortunately, this means all future trips, including your trip, will not operate. We deeply regret the fact that we cannot operate your trip. We know this raises many questions including "will I get my money back". At this time we just do not have many answers to your questions. We will do our best to get back to you with more information as it is available.

I am personally deeply sorry that we have failed to provide your trip."

I've been working on the GrandLuxe for a few years now and am on it as I write this. We (crew) are all sad and angry, having been given notice THIS MORNING that the train will cease TOMORROW; supposedly we'll all be flown home Friday, and paid, tho' the office may close beforehand for all we know. This morning Tom Rader's v.p. came aboard to announce this, and said things like "In all my years I've never worked with a better bunch of folks"--tho' he's met us all maybe once-- and the ever-classic "No one feels worse about this than [owner] Tom." Yes, Tom, I imagine most of us feel far worse than you.
