Today would mark the 89th birthday of Capt. Alan L. Bates, who passed away on New Year's Day. A whistle salute and posthumous natal day greeting with gratitude for all that Alan did to promote and preserve our river heritage -- and for his longtime friendship and guidance.

A Whistle Salute to Alan
Capt. Mike Fitzgerald just phoned me from the pilothouse of the Str. BELLE of LOUISVILLE. He blew the customary long and two shorts on the whistle in tribute to Alan.
Thanks Mike!
