Was the towboat that pushed the barges piloted from in the towboat, or piloted remotely from the front of the excursion barges?

Remotely operated from the pilothouse midship on the lead barge.

Thanks. That's interesting. would there be anyone in the pilot house of the towboat then as a just in case?
I know MARAD has the River Explorer now. Is it down in Beaumont with the American Queen?
Sorry, I know I am full of questions. Just like to get answers to go along with them.

Chris, yes, last I knew the RIVER EXPLORER was in Beaumont. And yes, they did have someone in the pilothouse of the towboat "just in case".

AQ and River Explorer on Google

McFadden Bend Cutoff, Texas - Google Maps

Hopefully this link works. The AQ is in a group to the right, tied up to 3 Navy Reserve ships. Move a couple groups to the left and you'll see the River Explorer.

Thanks Judy. I had seen the American Queen there, I just hadn't thought to look for the River Explorer there. Thought the River Explorer was a neat idea, it just wasn't as attractive as the Queens were.
I had seen the River Queen down at Aurora once, but I was hurrying to get a load and didn't have time to stop and look at it.
