I just received an email from Capt. Carl Henry that he and the SCOTT STEGBAUER are headed for the UMR - unfortunately they'll pass through here when I'm back in New Orleans. But this email reminded me of the Howard Museum's River Ramblings weekend, this year Aug. 21, with Capt. Henry as the speaker. As always, a trip on the BELLE precedes the talk in the Carriage House of the museum, and pre- and post- talk sessions will be held at the Kingfish Restaurant and the Towne Place Suites a block away. Looking at the accumulation of 'stuff' I brought home from my NOLA apartment, I think it is safe to say there will be another giveaway of steamboat clothing and souvenirs to those who attend too. Mark your calendars for the weekend of Aug. 21 for a great steamboating gathering.
Judy,
I m already planning to attend...wouldn't miss it for the world. One question, however...is there an early bird sale?

Early bird sale
...like maybe at the Chautauqua weekend? We'll see how my unpacking and sorting goes...
Yeah, I'd be interested in seeing what's available early before all the good NATCHEZ items are gone 🙂
A few years ago the MOR S&D Chapter held an evening meeting in the museum carriage house, which Yvonne and I were more than happy to host. Seeing a golden opportunity here, I loaded up several boxes of steamboaty trinkets, coffee mugs and other river items that needed to find new homes, spreading them out on tables in an adjoining room during Kenny Howe's great talk. When the give-away was announced, everything was very orderly (no pushing, shouting or fighting!) and ALL of it disappeared within 15 minutes! At Judy's suggestion, I think the August gathering will be another good time to share with our steamboating family!
Recently, I've been culling my closets and dusty boxes for duplicate river books. Several containers of them are now for sale in the gift shop with all proceeds benefitting the museum operating fund.
Speaking of "steamboat stuff", here are several pictures of my cat, Casey, who departed this earth at age 14 on March 20th. He loved to get into the middle of my sorting and filing work, but always quickly lost interest, went to sleep or simply occupied a box to prevent me from using it. Why felines don't file!
Hope to see y'all at the museum festival (May 15-16) and/or at River Ramblings on August 21st.
Casey looks just like my beloved Houdini, also awaiting me on a steamboat in heaven somewhere. I bet they are together. Orange male tabs are the best.
Steamboat souvenirs
We also had an extravaganza of giveaway items at the Lowe Hotel in Point Pleasant at an MOR meeting. We had been given a lot of old, very old, Greene Line daily papers and other materials from Dorothea Frye, along with some other items from her vast storehouse of materials. That too disappeared rapidly, although was there some eye-gouging and hair-pulling at that event?
I suspect we'll have quite a spread of stuff looking for good homes this summer - just as long as it doesn't show up later on EBay!
Keith, Those pictures of Casey are priceless. Obviously he was into steamboating too.
To say nothing of being into boxes.... (but, of course, that's in the cat union rules.)
All cats are agents of the FBI, Feline Bureau of Investigation.
