Glad to hear some folks are having a good time at the River Rambling program at the Howard today. Hope y'all stay cool!

For those who couldn't make it to the Howard, there is another chance to gather with river folks and learn about history and have some fun. Any and All, please join us in Marietta, OH for the 71st annual meeting of the Sons & Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen. To clarify you DO NOT have to be a son or daughter of a pioneer riverman to attend!
All that you need is an interest in old boats and the people who ran them.

This year's meeting will feature a presentation by David Tschiggfrie on the Steamer AVALON. For those of you who don't know Dave, you are in for a real treat, as he is the foremost authority on the AVALON.

We start Friday evening at the Lafayette Hotel in downtown Marietta with a social mixer and display of models, paintings and other river memorablia. For those arriving Thursday or early Friday, be on the lookout for the return of the steam towboat W.P. SNYDER, JR. The SNYDER will be returning sometime Thursday from the shipyard at South Point, OH where she received a new hull and a new sternwheel.

Saturday we will have a picnic on the grounds of the River Museum, and Dave Tschiggfrie will present the first half of his AVALON program. After a break late in the afternoon, the annual banquet will be held at the Lafayette followed by the second half of Dave's program. Some very pleasant surprises are in store as well.

Please join us for a fun-filled weekend concerning all things steamboats and renew old friendships and make new ones. The weatherman promises good weather!

Bob, is it possible for someone to tape Dave's presentation on the AVALON, and have it for sale......for those of us who cannot attend the upcoming S & D Annual Meeting?

Sharon, you'd have to check with Dave.

Tom,
Please pass along any information you might get back from David and Jonathan about making a DVD of the program. I'd like a copy too and will gladly pay for it since I will not be attending the festivities in Marietta.

Thanks for your help with this Tom!

Well, folks, I've talked with Dad, and here's the situation. We could conceivably make a DVD one of two ways, and there are issues with both:

1) Film the presentation at Marietta. If we do this, the camcorder will not pick up the projected slides very well at all, and the audio will be distorted.

2) Digitize the slides and dub audio. If we do this, the cost of digitizing the slides is, in a word, prohibitive. Although we already have the audio in digital format, either purchasing the necessary scanning equipment or paying for digitizing services is beyond our very limited budget.

So there you have it. It doesn't look like a DVD will be forthcoming, unless a sudden windfall should rain down DVD-producing funds.

In addition, I would assume that there are copyright issues inherent in both methods, as the (currently) 278 slides come from a variety of sources and are strictly for educational, not-for-profit usage, as defined in fair use law. This is my understanding of image copyrights.

I can scan slides, although it would take a while to do 278! Can only do 4 at a time. If there are some others out there with slide scanning capabilities, maybe they will help.
