I just checked the TP website, and they are getting snow in New Orleans! This looks like more than I've ever seen down there, but still nothing to us Northerners. The NATCHEZ is in her winter layup, with mostly outside painting to be done. Needless to say, this weather isn't conducive to that!

The NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT reported this morning that the area was to get from 2 to 4 inches of snow! Ice coated bridges were causing numerous fender benders and kids were getting a rare "snow day" off from school!

With the icy road conditions, it likely would be a FAST trip down Silver Street to Natchez-Under-The-Hill today!!!

I heard from Baton Rouge that the bridges crossing the Mississippi were closed due to icing, as well as all the schools being closed...

I enjoyed a sleet storm in Vicksburg in 1961. Those people could drive in swamps, but not on ice, so the highway department dumped eight inches of sand on the bridge to Delta, which made the bridge a swamp. Traffic moved easily though ankle-deep sand.

I pray that the cold and snow doesn't stay around long in New Orleans. With Ambassadors International stock currently at a wopping $ 0.75, they probably have not given much thought to properly laying up steamboats for a long cold winter.

Let's hope the sitters for the grand old lady have an extra blanket or two to put on the ol' gal when the temp get below freezing. A case of frost bit pipes could send the condition of the DELTA QUEEN from "resting comfortably" to "critical".

Friday noon NOLA weather

It is currently 52 and sunny, with low temps no less than 50 the next 5 days, so I'm sure the snow is long gone and the cold dangers past.

Hey Ted do you remember when the ice came down below Baton Rouge in the early 80's. Was that our first Ft. Jackson trip? I remember I was Mate and Capt. Mac was master and I had to call him when I saw the first ice flows.

That probably was December 1983. I was on the MQ as Jr. Activities Director for the Christmas trip, I believe the 22nd - 29th. It was 28 in Natchez on Christmas Day. I've posted pix before of the icicles on the fantail and paddlewheel. When we were headed back to NOLA, we were told to take on water in Baton Rouge, as NOLA had little water pressure. It had gotten down to 6 in NOLA and pipes burst everywhere. I have shots of fountains with ice, and down at Todd Shipyard a pipe burst, creating a huge icicle and ice fall on their dock. I think that was the lowest temp in modern history, and more pipes were burst then than at any other cold snap.
1) The icicles on the fantail Dec. 25, 1983.
2 and 3) The officers' dining room, in commemoration of the Today in History item 12/12/85. The CRIMSON GLORY 'met' the MQ very close to this spot.2650.jpg2651.jpg2652.jpg
