Greetings From New Orleans ,
For the first time in thirty years , I actually boarded a ship in a BLIZZARD ! I came on board the M/T Iver Expert , at six am this morning , anchored in the White Castle Anchorage ( river mile 192 LMR ) and took her to the Exxon Refinery in Baton Rouge ( river mile 232.2 ). When coming on board the Iver Expert this morning in the heavy rain which soon turned to sleet and then soon turned to snow and then came down in buckets . In fact the snow came down so hard that the ship's radars were shut out and of no use and I actually had to wait for over two hours for daylight before the snow let up well enough for us see . The local weather stations reported that tonight much of south east Louisiana will be in the low to mid 20's and that the bridges and interstates were either closed or would be closing . Also , it was reported that the weather will be so severe that our New Orleans - Baton Rouge Pilot office has suspended all operations of dispatching of pilots . Not Quite another day at the office on the Lower Mississippi River .
Smooth Sailing !

Rare snowfall hits La., Miss. - Yahoo! News Photos
For those of us who live in the snow starved south, this kind of thing is ecstacy, especially if you are 12 and under. It also is a boom to those in the plumbing business as southern pipes are rarely protected against freezing weather. Forget about driving. And since most people have their Christmas decorations up, there will be lots of pictures taken of homes in the almost White Christmas scenario. But take those pictures quickly, don't dilly dally as it will be gone in a flash in the balmy weather that follows.

Greetings From The Snowy South !
Well , as the man once said , " Hear Today , Gone Tomorrow " ! The local weather stations have now predicted that today's highs will be in the 50's , so we here in the SOUTH can honestly say Goodby to our short lived holiday season , snow experience . No telling if we will see anymore snow for the remainder of the 08'-09' winter but it was fun while it lasted , although it was somewhat of a hassel for some of the inexperienced native drivers to deal with when out on the roads and interstates !
Smooth Sailing !
