Is there a story behind the thin gold strips on the DQ stack? What about the white DQ letters? What happened to the name boards on the pilot house?

I'm placing this on Bruce's new thread because the "nightmare" thread is too crowded. Judy refers to the splashboard portholes being removed in 83-84 layover and the first sternwheel boat visible is Jan DiCarlo's Dixie. The Dixie was rebuilt in 1982 by John Beatty and first appeared at the Marietta Sternwheel festival in September 1983. So the picture is tied pretty well to the 1983 time frame.
Bill: I had vague recollections that the DQ was at Marietta two years in a row for the S&D meeting so it WAS '83 and '84 -- the M/V FRED WAY was christened that year and was just aft of the DQ. Thanks! You saved me having to dig through dusty boxes!

Keith's post got my attention as to S & D meeting of 1983.. The center fold photo on pages 24 & 25 of the December 1983 Reflector is a spectacular photograph of the same event and time as Bruce's. Allen Hess took the photo.
Somehow maybe one of you computer wizards can copy it and send to Franz.
Hi, Bruce, Keith, Bill & gang:
I'm fuzzy on all of the dates when the DQ was where, when. I do vividly recall a bright, sunny September afternoon in Marietta, September 17, 1983 being aboard the DQ at the Marietta landing. The S&D crowd were invited aboard and Capt. Fred Way had just brought out his then new WAY'S PACKET DIRECTORY, 1848-1983. Those of us with fresh, new copies sat on the front by the big bell with Fred autographing our volumes.
Yep, here it is: "To Dale Flick my good friend--on board the DELTA QUEEN, Marietta, O. Sept. 17, 1983." Fred never really 'held court.' He was there, available and ready to chat, share and sign his incredible volume as one friend to another. Other signatures in my volume are: Prima DiCarlo, Lenore and Jerry Stuphin, Tom Kenny.
Take a look in all of your steamboat books on personal library shelves at home and note the signatures from those in the steamboat world long gone. Rick Kesterman, Cincinnati Historical Society, recently showed/scanned the front page of Fred Way's SAGA OF THE DELTA QUEEN. Names appearing are: Henry Hull [? Hard to read.] carpenter; Cary Johnson, William Greenwood, B. Edgington, Watchman; Capt. Robt. E. Reed, Marine Manager, Wheeling Steel Corp.; Mrs. E.N. Hamilton; Charlie Sparka, Electrician, DELTA QUEEN; Betty Barkhau, Concessionaire [On the DQ]; Letha C. Greene.
What's the lesson here? Don't ever pass up looking in a river book you see at a yard sale, old book store or estate auction.
Cheers,
R. Dale Flick
Yes there is and as soon as I shovel thru some slides tonight I'll shed some light on it. If someone can instructl me if it is possible to scan a slide on a common garden variety scanner I just might try that. Computer Dumkof at this keyboard--just like the Royal typewriter I got very used 46 years ago....it still hasn't learned how to spell.

Jim,
for slides you need scanner specially equipped for slides. Alternative: Put the slides in your slide projector and make a picture of the projection with your digital camera.

Bruce: Last evening I dug into an old trunk full of steamboat photo albums and, wonder of wonders, FOUND that I had a picture of the DQ at the Marietta landing which looks nearly identical to yours. It was taken Saturday, September 17, 1983.

Clearly a lot of us were in the same place at the same time. I wish I understood that S&D membership was open to anyone. It would have been fun to have been at the 1980,81,82, and 83 meetings. Yet, clearly I got pretty close to the 83 meeting.
Hey, that's a photography secret there!
Did that lots of times to avoid the print negative developement cost-pre digital days! Most "serious" photo's thought I was crazy, but works for small prints!
