Just found this relic - this is circa 1981 with yours truly ticklin' the ivories with Vic and Mom Tooker along with Howard Kadison on drums accompanying whatever riverboat/ragtime tune being offered up. Note the butter dish holding the piano lid at just the right height, and best of all, Lexie's mural as the background.1044.jpg

Great Pic Jazzou! Hmm, maybe on the Oct 21 '08 cruise we can get away with parting the curtains and having the mural as the background once again?

Wowziers! It's a great idea - I don't see why it couldn't be done. If I'm on board I will try to work it out.

IF you're on board??? I booked assuming you'd be!!! BTW, Linda is enjoying your CD (Ragtime) in her car. I recently picked up a 33 album of "It's Showtime on the DQ featuring Fred Dodd." Any ideas when this was recorded? I have to set up the turntable and see if it sounds good (sure will be glad when I finish this house and don't have everything on folding tables or in a box!).

You can bet it will sound good, even if it's scratched up some. Fred's such a fine and talented guy. Not sure when he recorded that album, but probably sometime in the early 80's. Glad Linda is enjoying some ragtime in her car. I hope she lets you listen to it once in a while.

It's too far in advance to know about next year's schedule, or even if I will go back, but I suspect Phyllis will work something out for me to be onboard at least part of that trip.

Yes, she does once in a while, but mostly I have to resort to one of the CD's from my "Complete Works of Scott Joplin" CDs--of course it is NOT the complete works, but there's plenty of variety!
Now I'm putting together my recordings of the calliope from my last two trips. Once I'm done, I need some giant speakers so I can blast out those Rapper "tunes" at the stop light! That'll shake 'em up a bit! Heh, Heh, heh!

David Dewey,
Fred Dodd's LP must have been made , at the latest, in the late 70's. I bought one in 1979, during my 1st DQ trip. The text on the back of the LP cover remarks that the DQ was only overnight steamboat on America's rivers, so that would mean per-1976??? Heck, what do I know!

Fred Dodd was also onboard that July 1979 trip as one of the entertainers, as was Tony Martin, who is the drummer on that album...

I'd ask Shipyard Sam, Frank Prudent, Judy Patsch or Keith Norrington for confirmation on this...they were on the DQ plenty in the 1970's

Pete,
I just played the record, and based on the songs, that's about when I'd date it too. Great playin' BTW.

David,

Is there not a date somewhere on the label or the album cover. Publishing date, copyright for the recording? Anything like that?

The one I posess does not have a date on it at all, the records labels on each side, nor on it's cover anywhere...

I believe it was '78, but I'll ask Fred. Meantime, a little-known fact: the photo for the album cover was taken from the edge of the stage as the boat was underway. It was taken by Karen Dodd, Fred's wife, now known as Toots Maloy...

That is a good record...down to Henry Mitchell playing the Tambourine!

I wondered about that picture--boy, you couldn't get away with that nowadays! We've lost out on a lot of neat stuff we used to be able to do. Now that I know more about the album, I'll treasure it even more! Never thought my question would get so much response!

I dug out my recording last night and there's nary a date to be seen on the album or cover. However, the 1979 date seems right on the mark. It's a dandy recording which includes "Hava Nagilah" and I remember that being a favorite of the passengers when Fred had his banjo "ablaze" during the evening show in the Orleans Room.

I've been in touch with Fred and he thinks it was 1978 that he recorded "Showtime on the DQ"
