I can't believe it is time to start packing, boarding the bird (um, just realized that can be interpreted at least two ways, but in this case it means taking Carlos to the pet shop to be well-cared for while we're Steamboatin') and securing the house so we can be on our "second home" for a few days. So with whom are we sharing our "second home" this time? I know of a few of you already, but thought I'd get all to chime in.
AND who all will be at our shore stops & do you have any suggestions of what to see/do while we are "landed"? Not much time left to make plans!
Steamcerely,
David Dewey

Hmmm.. Can we say, "Dueling Calliopes"? What an event this will be, hope you can bring 'er along!
Thinking of taking another BOL trip that afternoon too. Linda's thinking of doing something else--but my response is--"BUT IT'S A STEAMBOAT!!" One ride is never enough (unless you spot an empty sight glass. . . .)!

I'm planning to "chase", er-"follow" from the shore and shoot video. Not sure if I'll go all the way to Memphis but I'm planning to start out at Cincinnati and go as far as Paducah or Cape Giradeau depending on whatever happens at home. The stop at Louisville is a must!

Dave and Dave...
Add me to the list of people who want the dueling calliopes! Perhaps we can get the BELLE interested, too? It would be great to hear 3 steam calliopes all together to welcome the DELTA QUEEN to Louisville and get all in ear shot of downtown to come down to the waterfront for the festival and wharf party!
It will be a great event to celebrate the life of America's steamboat...and one I am sure we will all still be talking about on her decks when she is saved once again!
~Travis~
Jim, do you know if the DQ will be following the schedule on MAL's website that says she will be in Cincinnati on Tuesday, Maysville on Wednesday, and then on to Madison and Louisville? I plan to be present for her final departure from Cincy and then follow her upriver to Madison and back taking photos along the way. Hopefully I will finally get to meet you and other members of the board. If you see a guy wearing a hat that says "AQ Deckhand," that will be me.

P.S. I emailed Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory and all members of council urging them to make Tuesday, October 21st, Delta Queen Day in Cincinnati and I also encouraged them to invite citizens to come down to the Public Landing to say good-bye to our beloved Queen. So far, I have received three replies stating support for saving the DQ. Councilman Chris Bortz attached a PDF of a resolution in support of Sen. Voinovich's bill, which was approved by council today. No one, however, has responded to my request for a DQ Day. - A
The Bear and the Redhead are departing for Cincinnati in the morning with a stop at a bourbon distllery or two on the way. Looking forward to meeting David and other new friends as well as seeing many old friends.

Dave and Linda,
Doubtful that either the BELLE or the SPIRIT will be running on the 24th - after Labor Day, the BELLE usually only runs a trip Sat. and Sun. Also, the staff of the BELLE is involved in putting on the celebration on the Landing that day - the whole city of Louisville is invited, so I doubt they'd take a whole boatload of people away from their party! Sounds like you don't have to make other plans - there will be a lot happening on the Landing that I certainly wouldn't want to miss.
See you soon...............Pat
Jim: I still have that box of old steamboat and river films for you. Will you have room to haul them home this trip? If so, I'll bring them down to the wharf.
The BELLE BIG EASY WHARF PARTY on October 24th is a dockside event, beginning at 5:00 PM. There is no cover charge and included is a cash bar, New Orleans style food and a Blues band. The party winds up at 11:00 PM.
An optional sightseeing cruise on the SPIRIT OF JEFFERSON will be available from 7:00-9:00 PM.
Visit the boat's website at Steamboat Belle of Louisville - Excursions, Dance Cruises, Dinner Cruises, Charters, Weddings on the Ohio River for information.
I'll be down to see her in Louisville too, wouldn't miss it for anything. What's her "scheduled" arrival and departure times? Also where is she to be on the 25th and 26th, as I'd like to chase her down river during the weekend if possible.
See ya soon!
Phillip
Phillip, check it out here, thanks to Pat for posting it, see post #2 of this thread:

Thanks for pulling out that link, Bruno - I was just again searching for the schedule. Only change now, according to Vicki's last update, is we'll be in Madison from 8 AM until 1 PM.
It isn't that Phillip isn't paying attention, he just got off the QE2 doing her last crossing into New York - and Frank is on now, as she heads back to Southhampton on her final crossing.
Both you and Annie did a good job of trying to explain the DQ/AQ schedule for the last 2 trips, but David doesn't seem to understand that we will not be traveling with the AQ at all - too bad, but that's the way it is.
See you along the river, Phillip.....................
Pat
I know we aren't traveling with the AQ, but I know both boats will be in Memphis on the 31st, so thought we might be in close proximity at some point during the trip. MAL, last I looked, still shows two different trips for the AQ & I am not certain which one is correct--she can't be in two places at once, can she?? (OK, lets not start a thread about spliting the AQ in two so's there's two smaller boats. . . 🙂 )
Gotta get to packing, what's the weather like over there?

Thanks for the info guys, can't wait to see all of you, but this sure has been a somber month. The QE2 was built on the river Clyde in 1967, very near where the DQ's hull was so many years before. This month I'll say Goodbye to one forever, and hopefully to the second only for a little while. Can't think of a better way to spend my birthday this Friday though than to be on the Delta Queen!
Phillip
The forecast for Friday and Saturday calls for wretched weather, with 80% chance of showers and plunging temperatures. So, for those planning to be on the Louisville waterfront, dress warmly and bring an umbrella!
The DQ was featured on WHAS news this morning and information given for Friday's "farewell party" at the wharf.
