Wicket Dams and relatively new patents

While doing some online research for a new page at steamboats.org about the Maneuverboat 35 that is part of an exhibit of the Army Corps or Engineers at Hannibal Locks & Dam on the Ohio River (www.steamboats.org/steamboat-pictures/maneuverboat-35.html), I found two very interesting patents dealing with wicket dams, just issued in 1994 and 1995:

Wicket dam and lifting jack
(www.patentstorm.us/patents/5433555.html)

Weak link prop for wicket dam
(www.patentstorm.us/patents/5310284-description.html)

Does anyone have an idea on why there are still patents being requested for a technology that almost vanished?

Still Used on Ohio River

Olmstead L&D, for one, will have a wicket dam when completed.

Thanks! Well, that happens if you're too sure about a fact, hence that wicket dams are an old and disappearing technology. Even if you read the opposite you don't see it 😉 and I did read the Chuck Parrish document ...
