This weekend we will be visiting the 1854 ship wreck of the riverboat “Plumas” on the upper Sacramento River in California. We will be taking basic measurements and will have a long probe to try and find something definitive. The ship wreck is below the water table and the wood has rotted and collapsed creating a ship shaped sink hole.
This was a stern wheeler of about 50 tons and I am asking this group for some help on just were to probe to find something large, solid and would survive 160 years in water and mud. like maybe cast iron.
Thanks in advance, Dave Freeman
Dave, The engines will be on either side, forward of the wheel. Boilers will be just forward of midships. Probably the largest metal parts, but other might have other ideas!

PS would love to go, but can't "wade' through poison oak!
So probe along each side!?
The poison oak and ticks should be frozen and died back. We are going this Sunday if the river stays low. (There is an extra seat in the canoe!)

Dave,
Well, poison oak is still able to nail you, if you break a branch of it and get it on you! However, I will be in Dunsmuir on Sunday, or I'd probably go along!
Yes, I would probe either side, but in a little bit, and then probably just about center of the depression Wish you had ground probing radar!!
