30 years ago today, geez how time flies, the MISSISSIPPI QUEEN struck the CRIMSON GLORY near Donaldsonville LA. and sank. She was in 80 feet of water at the time but luckily local towboats pushed her up onto a sandbar so that only the stern of her main deck was underwater. But since her bottom was sitting on the bottom of the river at that point, that was a sinking, no matter how they sugarcoated it. The only injuries occurred when the passengers were at Houmas House awaiting transportation to NOLA, seems there were some injuries from dancing as I recall. The MQ was taken to NOLA to Avondale and miraculously was back in service in a little over three months. This was the most serious of many mishaps in her too short lifespan.
These two photos were taken by Capt. Roddy Hammett of the NATCHEZ.9686.jpg9687.jpg
