My wife has recently discovered that Nathan T. Avant who was Master/Owner of the DR. BUFFINGTON ca. 1860/61 is one of her ancestors. I have a fair amount of information on the BUFFINGTON in my database, but cannot find Avant associated with any other boats. He does not show up in the captains and owners list in Ways. Do any of the knowledgable genealogists/historians on this board have any other river connections for him? He was from Union Ark. and apparently took the BUFFINGTON from the Red River trade to the White River. He appears to have owned/commanded the boat for only one season before selling her back to A. J. Buffington. Any help would be gratly appreciated.

I found these two entries one for the owner
RIVERBOAT COMPANIES STARTING WITH A

and one for the boat
Riverboats Starting With D, Page 2

I don't know if they are any help, since they appear to only confirm what you already know.

This one may help,

although the information provided doesn't take into account the sale of the boat back to the previous owner before she sank.

Thaks so much Bruce! Most of that we had, but not his place of burial. It's also nice to have another source for information. BTW, do you nave any north Georgia ancestors who spelled the name McCollough?
