Happy Holiday Greetings from San Antonio. Just received the new Reflector today. Kudos, David. Looks like another good one. Any guesses on the name of the boat on the cover? I'll take a stab at it an say it's the GOLD SHIELD. The Towboat Directory has the right dates and the photo of her I have in my files looks pretty similar. Any thoughts?
Another vote for the GOLD SHIELD
Hi Jerry! I second your vote that the steam towboat pictured on the cover of the December issue of the S&D Reflector is the GOLD SHIELD, formerly the WYNOKA, built at Dubuque in 1899 and briefly named BISSO. The late Capt. C.S. "Rip" Ware, pilot on the Str. DELTA QUEEN, worked on this boat and used to regale us with tales of his early river career days. I, too, compared the photo with others and I also had a glossy print of the cover picture, from the files of the St. Louis bureau of Wide World Photos. With the aid of several strong magnifying glasses I can make out the name on the tiny stern nameboard.
Congrats and gratitude to "Editor Dave" for another stellar issue of the Reflector!
Case closed...and another positive vote for the Reflector...great job Dave! Cap'n Walnut
Christmas Greetings and Best Wishes for 2013 from the snowed-under UMR at Dubuque. Over 14 inches fell here a week ago (with more promised for tonight) and my own copy of the REFLECTOR has yet to appear in the mailbox! In the meantime, congratulations to our ever-faithful and keen-eyed readers at ID-ing our front cover guest as GOLD SHIELD. We'll run a short post scrip about her in March's special 50th Anniversary edition. Thanks for your kind and generous comments about the latest issue, and for your continued support of the magazine and its editor. It is a real pleasure and privilege to be entrusted with sharing the memories, stories and photos of our wonderful river friends. See you all in a couple of months!
