As well as being a great cook, "mom" had one heck of a temper. When I was on the MQ I seen here get pretty mad with people...lol

For a Frosty Mug...

I know I wrote a story on here about S&G at some time or another, but I haven't found it. My relationship with that great Cairo watering hole may have started as early as 1965, my first year on the DELTA QUEEN, and that may have been when I first found those frosted mugs that the barkeep kept iced-up in a deep-freezer.

But it was those gallons and gallons of jug beer, I remember most, that my crew brought back to the boat from the Cairo beer palace, starting in 1970, once we began those famous beer blasts after departing the Ohio River downbound after a busy time being up at all hours of the day and night making repeated locks on the Ohio. That was Cap's way of treating us. He relished smelly limburger cheese sandwiches on dark Cincinnati rye smothered with thick slices of Burmuda onion and washed down with the cold Cairo brew.

For a HUGE frosty mug, what does the combination of the DELTA QUEEN potable water hose, the hydrant fitting, a pipe wrench, and Coca-Cola have in common with the Smith & Groves Saloon?

Great steamboat cookbook

A really fine cookbook with some great steamboat pictures, still readily available, is:

Mississippi Memories: Classic American Cooking from the Heartland to the Mississippi Bayou
