Familiar DQ "Arty-fact" sold on Ebay

While browsing the DQ items on Ebay last week I was surprised to see a very familiar artifact. It was the boat tours sign from the long ago days when the public was permitted to come aboard and tour the boat for the sum of 25 cents. Our own David J. Tschiggfrie, DQ crew member for many summers, was the artist for this sign, which he painted on board during the summer of 1978 to replace its well worn predecessor. The discarded and previous sign was in my collection for a time and now resides at the Middle Mississippi River Museum, curated by Miss Judy Patsch.

The sign fetched $184.39 on the Ebay auction!3153.jpg

Some of us, at least Florida, California and New York, look at eBay "Delta Queen" stuff everyday, actually a few times a day. Some of it is very intrguing, some of it, especially the artist's prints showing the DQ with two stacks is a piece of you-know-what (was this artist on drugs?)...but the DQS Company Tie and Suspenders? You betcha, New York is interested....
And I'm very interested in the 5 or MORE-timer PSSOA pins offered recently on eBay, and the final price there-of...

Keith, I thought this particular eBay offering was quite spectacular, and am not surprised at all who is winning the bid. The two of them, the "offerers" define "steamboating"... Deb and I are proud to know them...but ya know, once they decide to bid on a Delta Queen item, you're gonna lose, they're gonna win...they bid, and you just should sit back and let it happen....

Well, unlike Bruno, I'm not privy to their ebay id's (Hey Bruno, you should let me know so we don't bid against each other!--I've been eying the tie & suspenders too--although I do already have a tie). I watched this wonderful item, and even toyed with bidding so it could find it's way back to the boat or the Howard. Lack of loose folding money pre-empted that idea! Good to hear it did go to an appreciative home.

I, too, frequently take a gander at the DQ items offered on Ebay. What surprises me is that, often, the valuable, historic items are not bid upon, and other more recent trinkets that are in plentiful supply bring BIG prices! Again, I suppose it's about what "era" of the DQ's lengthy reign one is interested in. Makes me think it's time to clean out closets and dusty boxes and try to recoup some of my losses in the stock market!

I don't know WHO ended up with the old DQ sign, but I, too, hope it found a happy home where it will be appreciated. Dave Tschiggfrie is an expert steamboat sign painter and I am honored to have the old PURSER'S OFFICE sign that hung on the DQ bow for many years near the stairway and which he also replaced with an updated version, presenting yours truly witht the discarded one.

I had sold two old souvenir DQ plates that sold for over $100 each in a bidding war of sorts, only to see the same plate two weeks later not sell at all in a $14.99 auction.

With new ebay rules, bidders can't see the other bidders on an auction, except for the seller.

It's all market driven for sure...

It's amazing what things go for... for example, this album on Amazon is being sold for nearly 300 smackers:

Amazon.com: The Delta Queen's Carefree Calliope: Vic Tooker, Dan Foreman, Pete Eveland: Music

Yes, most of my 1200+ items purchased were gotten before EBAY became big business...back when the bidder's name was shown. That was a lot of the fun of it. I met several people in the Streckfus family through our Ebay bidding, and there were a couple of DQ bidders, that when I saw their names, it was Forget IT! They'll outbid us all! By knowing the bidders, we could also let each other know if we weren't going to join the fray, or sometimes make a tradeoff if 2 items were on at the same time. But just like everything else, EBAY has gone big business, and while I still check Streckfus every day, I rarely look at any other categories any more. One casualty of EBAY is our annual postcard show. It was cancelled this year. We used to have 30 or more dealers present, and I could easily drop $500 on steamboat cards in that day. But as EBAY grew, our dealers diminished and now the show is kaput - much easier and cheaper to sell online than to haul boxes from state to state - just another way electronic communication has replaced human communication.

I have two of those LP's, one was mine...the other my Grandpa Zahn's...I've hesitiated "ebaying" them due to shipping them in a safe, yet cost effective manner.

I have received some emails through ebay questioning me as to why I would part with all the DQ material, especially with the older stuff..and when I told them why, they almost seem to get mad at me! That being said, they don't bid on the stuff though.

As for your card shows, same held true for me with my spare car parts...I used to go to these car show/swap meets, however with a sales tool like ebay, even with their escalading fees today it doesn't pay for me to even go to such an event...

Hello all,

There are an interesting couple of stories about this particular album.

When QCA was recording the "Carefree Calliope" they wanted to smooth out the sound of the calliope and the DELTA QUEEN was positioned under the Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati. This created a couple of problems because of reverb and the cars above. So the sound was muted with thick sponge mic covers. Vic Tooker once told me they "muffled out all the calliope sound!" He was never too happy with that recording and gave several dozen away in my presence. He never autographed those...his personal band recordings were always autographed (as was my copy of the 45rpm of "On the Mississippi Queen" and the sheet music to the same tune).

In all the recordings of Dan Forman you will hear one verse of every song is accompanied by the Una Fon (however, you have to turn it up really loud to hear these tuned door bells).

Lastly, the recording of "Baby Face" is attributed to Dan Forman. However, it is actually Captain Gabriel Chengery performing the song.

Great addition to any collection and rereleased on CD by the Delta Queen Steamboat Company in 1999. The boats still had a few before I was "retired" so some still exist out there somewhere in a warehouse...or perhaps still aboard the DELTA QUEEN.
