Judy,
I am jealous already! Someday, I too will convert to Mac...they are simply the best most stable computers on the market! Very wise choice! You will be quite happy with your decision for many years to come!
Travis
Thanks Judy ;;
Good to see some new pix ,,.. keep up the good work,,,,....
*RE: PRESIDENT photos/MAC.'*
Hi, Judy. I agree with Travis and David over the quality and clarity of your photos RE: Str. PRESIDENT. MAC program, you say? 'Hmmmm,' has me thinking when new computer time rolls around.
Do you think they'll ever get 'Humpty Dumpty' all together again in time?
Coal Haven Landing, Ohio River,
PREZ pieces
These pictures were taken in Alton, so not all of the pieces have been trucked to the site in St. Elmo yet. From what I've gathered, there isn't a huge amount over there, and there's not a huge amount in Alton, so where is the rest of a 291x84 boat? As to putting her back together, this is a 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzle, as I see it. Anything past 100 pieces is beyond my ability! As to Mac - that's what I had from the beginning until for some dumb reason I went to a Dell about 7 years ago and got lost in the dust. Hopefully I can play some catchup now with this MacBook.
Macbooks, pictures, and a question for Dave Morecraft
Judy, As I have told you before, Macs are simply the best. I got one before I came to college, and I have never looked back. These are also wonderful pictures, and I too am interested how they plan to put her back together. Should be a very interesting process, and hopefully someone out that way will be able to put a lot of good pictures up of it. Another thought. Dave, have they ever come to you about restoring the calliope?
MATT;;
Yes, but not for some time now ,,.. We have been in contact with Dave C. and he is wanting the CaLLiope to play again,,.. But, this piece of the puzzle has many pieces missing..!
I sure don't want to see any more historic Nichol Steam CaLLiopes set silent,.. They need to be heard,,,...
So,, we will hope for the best,..
Here is a U tube vid I posted last week ,"Capt.Doc Hawley" playing at TaLL Stacks 1992 on a Morecraft Steam CaLLiope #32-003,"Nichol reproduction"

Dave,
Many thanks for posting Doc's 1992 peformance of "Quality Plus." What a blast from the past!! Last time I heard him play that was in September 1968 as the DQ departed La Crosse NB. Doc has the uncanny ability (like Vic Tooker) of digging up the most obscure, esoteric pieces and playing them on the calliope. Just when I think I've heard all or most of the songs in his repertoire, he comes up with a new one. I was told by Capt. Gabe Chengery that this song was used by the Wm. Schaeffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, IA, in their radio or TV advertising years and years ago. The last line of the song's chorus as renovated by the advertising agency ended with a phrase that went something to the effect that you can be sure of the quality if . . . "it's a Paper-Mate Pen," which I presume was one of the big sellers of Schaeffer Pen Co. Back in the "good old days", whenever the DQ passed Fort Madison in daylight (usually not on the northbound trip) the pilot or purser would announce: "Ladies and gentlemens, we are now passing Fort Madison, the home of two pens." Not only was Schaeffer Co. based there, but it was also "home" to the Iowa State Penitentiary. Speaking of obscure song titles, another one that I haven't heard Doc play in ages is "When the Turkey in the Straw Danced the Chicken Reel." And I'm not making this up.
Old Favorites on the calliope
I haven't heard Doc play that one lately either. I'll see if I can remember to request it next month when I go to NOLA. We need to hear Wildwood Flower, Dorothea's favorite too. Besides Avalon, my favorite is Running Wild. I'll take a tape recorder along - let me know some other songs and I'll tell him ahead of time so he can review his repetoire.
Judy, one I'd like to request is 'Goodbye Little Girl Goodbye', and lucky you that you get to go back to NOLA!!
Judy,
Thanks for providing the opportunity to relay some requests to Doc and for the chance to have them recorded. Some pieces that I would like to hear again are "My Happiness", "Mary Lou", and "Third Man Theme." When Jonathan and I were in NOLA last summer doing calliope research, we recorded a long oral interview at Doc's home, but no calliope peformances by him. We missed the opportunity to record him at the keyboard by one day.
DAVID ;;
U R welcome ,have much more from that year ,, DQ-Gabe Ch.,, MQ-Dan Forman ,and more of Doc ..
I'm at Travis ,in Louisville now "sunday morn", ..They are working on the texas roof of the BELLE, and the CaLLiope is setting to the stern of the roof , we are going down to the BELLE soon," and will get some pix up later",,:)
MATT;; Good choice ,..!!
Good shots, Dave. Thanks for posting them. Too bad the ol' calliope wasn't connected to the steam line and that the boat didn't have steam up. Since today is St. Patty's Day, it would have been nice to hear "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling", "Peg 'O My Heart," "My Wild Irish Rose," and other favorites from the Emerald Isle. We Irish souls, like the O'Tschiggfries, have a special place in our heart for these tunes. The Tschiggfrie clan comes from the southern part of Ireland -- down around Munich! Thanks again, and hope to see you somewhere on the river this season!
Thanks David ,, Some of my favs ,,Sweet Rosie O'Grady and Peggy O'Neal,..
Yes I sincerly hope that our paths will cross this season ...:) Too bad ,,July 18th is Circus Parade day here,,...
