*RE: Auction/sale of collections*
Hi, Judy & steamboating colleagues:
Judy makes a very valid point about auctions of collections giving a wide audience a chance to obtain materials or ephemera. The Fenn collection was, from what I heard, pretty much a mile-stone in steamboat materials. Judy may know of other big collections in New Orleans that have come on the market.
My main thesis RE: the breaking up of the Gen. George Custer/Battle of the Little Big Horn was the separation of the archival materials that should have been maintained as a group collection due to the various documents 'talking' to each other in a dialogue. That just one example with far more tragic ones in mind. Cheers

Greatest Living Repository ...
The greatest living repository of steamboat history is Captain CCH of New Orleans. Whenever we talk on the telephone (about once a month), I am constantly taking notes. Though he would never fiddle with a computer, perhaps the new editor of the S&D Reflector can persuade him to write more of his more than entertaining and informative articles. His story of the loss of the J. M. WHITE seemed like a first-person account of the tragedy- it seemed as though the author was personally acquainted with the characters, and he would have been had he lived within their time period.
