Nice photo gallery on your new web site. Thanks for sharing!
Photo gallery
Yes, the photo gallery is interesting. As Keith mentioned on your previous thread about the site, several of the photos were his. I note several photos that appear to be mine also. I post photos and information on .org because I want to share them. I presume under internet rules or lack thereof that they are public domain or whatever the term is. But wouldn't it be considerate to contact the person to ask/tell them their photos are going to be used, or to give photo credits on the website? Neither Keith nor I were contacted, and of course we would have given permission to use our photos. I guess that's just today's electronic world, being able to acquire stuff without having to get it directly from the owner. That said, I'm happy to see our photos being used to further river history, and if you find more you'd like to use, please do so.
FYI
Copyright laws are not superceded by the internet, but it happens all the time. You should get credit for the photos and you should have been asked for permission to use them. I was recently contacted by someone who wanted to use my sketch of the Julia Belle Swaine on a t-shirt. They saw the sketch on line. They could have used it without me knowing, since it was for an event in Illinois. Not a big deal, but they did the right thing.
Judy,
First off I am truly sorry for not asking for permission before using your photos. However I found most of these pictures off of google images. I WILL credit you on the website for your images. and Keith also. Sorry again.
Thanks
Jake
Using pix
Thanks, Jake. Well I guess we've made it bigtime if the pictures are 'googled' for everyone! I just figured you had taken them off the .org postings. Obviously you had no idea of the source, and I had no idea about the 'googling' access. As I said earlier, if you find others you want to use, please do. I'm not upset that my pictures were used. I know we have some posters who don't post pix for fear that they will be used by others. That's not my viewpoint. We need to keep the flame going for steamboating. Spread the word!
If you have any more pictures that may be used for the website please let me know. I would like to apologize once again for my mistake of not asking and I have learned my lesson. I am working to track down all the pictures I have used and am giving credit for those pictures. I am just working to give people who visit my website a brief history in photos on the Goldenrod
Sharing Treasures for the Good of the Cause
Jake: As Judy said, most of us are more than happy to share our photos in any way possible that "spreads the gospel" about steamboating, showboating and river history. I noted that many of your website images are from my collection, which I have posted on this forum over the years and I am pleased and honored that you liked them enough to use them. The GOLDENROD has long been near and dear to me, so please feel free to use ANY of them you wish!
However, our main concern was that we felt it necessary to caution you that, although most river people are "happy to give", NOT everybody thinks as we do about photo sharing. Not securing permission could possibly cause you some problems. We certainly don't want this to happen and we wish you only the best in your endeavors to save the GOLDENROD. We applaud your efforts!
THANKS!
Googling
I use google images all the time. A real boon for artists. How they harvest all those pictures is beyond me. Clicking on an image usually takes you to the Web site of origin. I am doing a painting with an old woman in it. To get the proper older woman arm anatomy, I googled "Old Lady Arms". You would not believe what came up. But the jewel was the photo of Queen Elizabeth brandishing a big Glock with a silencer on it. (The other kind of "arms".) I'm sure it was a photo shopped queen, but I had to print it, anyway. OK, why didn't I just look in the mirror at my own arms? Well, I'm not that old, and I swim, a lot, which firms up potential flaps and staves off the dreaded "old lady arms". So there!
