Folks,
My new book on pre-Civil War steamboats on the western waters has just been released. It is entitled Steamboats and the Rise of the Cotton Kingdom and it covers the good (steamboat design, workers, cabin passage, deck passage, economic importance, gambling, racing, river improvements), the bad (role in Indian Removal, explosions, environmental effects), and the ugly (why railroads eclipsed steamboats). You can find out more about it on Amazon's website:

Wonderful book on 19th century steamboats

I wanted to let you all know that I bought "Steamboats and the Rise of the Cotton Kingdom" by Robert Gudmestad, and it is a treasure you would be wise not to miss!

It is a meticulous and detailed description of steamboats and their use in the 19th century. It is based among other things on tons of personal letters and diaries of regular people who had the experience of traveling by steamboats.

It has answered my questions for my novel about a steamboat owner and professional gambler like nothing else I have found.

I am so grateful to steamboats.org for being the place I learned about this book, as well as all the other helpful information you have given me.

Thanks, Dr. Gudmestad!
