Our annual Christmas Open House at the Howard Steamboat Museum will be this Sunday, December 13th, from 1:00 until 4:00 PM. The mansion will be decorated for the season with Santa and Mrs. Claus in the library to chat with the little ones and to pose for photos. Refreshments will be served in the dining room and the gift shop will be open and well stocked with plenty of steamboaty stocking stuffers. Admission is FREE.

An added feature to the festive event this year will be a book signing by Capt. Charlie Lehman with his just-off-the-press book, A Riverman's Lexicon (In Lehman's Terms), a MUST for every professional river person, river enthusiast, steamboat buff and buffette. Capt. Charlie and Miss Sally are dear friends and loyal supporters of the Howard Museum and administrator Yvonne Knight and I are delighted that Capt. Charlie has accepted our invitation to be on deck Sunday with his fascinating new tome of river terminology. Like a packet boat laden with freight, the 504 page publication is full of accurate information, humor, puns, poetry and interesting illustrations. And it's a "steal" at $25. After February 1st, the price goes up to $29.95 with a $5 shipping fee if ordered by mail -- as mentioned in another posting earlier this week. So, come to the museum on Sunday, visit with the distinguished author and obtain your autographed copy!

The Howard Steamboat Museum is located at 1101 East Market Street in Jeffersonville, Indiana (opposite Jeffboat) and the telephone number is 812-283-3728. For additional information, click on the museum website Howard Steamboat Museum - Home Page. As usual, I'll be on the "second deck" in the steamboat exhibits and look forward to seeing you!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all with best wishes for a happy and healthy 2010. And MANY THANKS for your continued support of the museum!

Keep up steam!

Book signing

It's great that you were able to get it arranged rather quickly to have Capt. Charlie autograph his book at the Howard open house... although the Bates/Hawley signing was arranged even quicker! Are there holiday decorations up in the mansion?

Yep, the mansion is tastefully decorated in the way it would have been for the Howard family's Christmas in the 1890's.

Yvonne and I arranged the book signing in less than 24 hours, thanks to e-mail!

Wish you could be with us -- and bring a sled load of your chocolate chip cookies!!!

Now that the chaos of Christmas is settling down, don't forget that Capt. Charlie Lehman's wonderful new book, A Riverman's Lexicon, is still available at an introductory discount price of $25 until January 31st, when the price increases to $29.95. Shipping is $5. If Santa forgot to leave this book at your landing, order today, directly from the author at:

Capt. Charles Lehman
P.O. Box 803
Crestwood, KY 40014

The book received a lengthy (and glowing!) review in the December 21st issue of The Waterways Journal.

Santa brought the book, as well as the Oil Sternwheel boat calendar. Both are "Duzies"!
