Back in the early to mid 20's the Howards went to St. Louis and while there took the attached picture. I know the boat tied to the wharf boat is the GOLDEN EAGLE and the boat at the lower end of the wharf is of course the IDLEWILD but what is the name of the boat in the middle? I can't identify it.
Remember a BIG Snickers bar is the prize to be presented to the winner at Howards Chataqua coming up next month.5155.jpg5156.jpg

middle boat

Offhand, it looks like the HELEN BLAIR, but I'm not at all sure on that. I'm off to announce a softball doubleheader now, but if someone hasn't provided a sure ID when I get back, I'll head upstairs to the pilefile and look for the suspect.

I don't think that she's the HELEN BLAIR: the stacks and the curve of the forward end of the decks are wrong. BLAIR's decks had a more pronounced curve rather than the flat front with smaller radii at the corners. There was another boat tht looked a great deal like IDLEWILD, which it might be, but I can't dredge up the name at the moment

My vote is the TENNESSEE BELLE. Capt. Fred Way writes in the June, 1977 edition of the S&D REFLECTOR, page 13, that "...the smokestacks on the TENNESSEE BELLE were drastically shortened and her pilothouse roof removed to duck bridges. [for a high-water trip to Huntington]" This was in 1927.

Running out of St. Louis that year were the ALABAMA, BALD EAGLE, BELLE OF CALHOUN and the GOLDEN EAGLE. So, if it's not the TENNESSEE BELLE, my next guess is the ALABAMA. But I really think it's the TENNESSEE BELLE.

As previously stated, this dandy image of the St. Louis waterfront is of the Eagle Packet Company wharfboat with the GOLDEN EAGLE alongside. Aft of her is the PIASA (formerly the MARY S. BLEES) also an Eagle Packet Co. boat and, down the levee is our old friend the IDLEWILD, today's BELLE OF LOUISVILLE.

Jimmy, please give that Snickers bar to somebody who doesn't have an ever EXPANDING waistline like mine!

Hope to see ya soon at the muzeem! Thanks!

Once again Keith you are the winner! But, you are stuck with getting the big Snickers bar, you can't decline the prize that's part of the contest rules. See you at the museum in May. I want to see how you like the new labels on the exhibits on the second floor. Hopefully they look more professional and contain more information. I need your input and suggestions.
