I am wishing to make a model of the first Mount Washington paddle steamer and am looking for information particularly relating to the engine. Has anyone access to plans or able to point me towards a relevant web site. I would be most grateful.

Hi, Simon & steamboating colleagues:
Simon, saw your above appeal for data RE: Str. MOUNT WASHINGTON. I'm not sure in my mind but found no reference to such in 'WAY'S PACKET DIRECTORY, 1848-1983.' If there was a MOUNT WASHINGTON appearing before Way's initial year 1848 I have no records on such here.
Is it possible you are referencing the walking beam engine Str. MOUNT WASHINGTON built for service on Lake Champlain under the 'Champlain Transportation Co.' banner. She was destroyed by fire in 1939 leaving the famed sidewheeler TICONDEROGA the lone survivor running running on those waters. If the MOUNT WASHINGTON you are seeking was an inland rivers steamer running before 1848, then there are hopefully others with longer memories and better records than mine. I tend to think you are seeking data on the steamer from Lake Champlain.
Cheers,
R. Dale Flick
Mount Washington
Thanks Dale,
Yes I am referring to the Mount Washington destroyed by fire in 1939. Have you any information, links or web sites you can let me have.
I should explain that I am trying to get information for a German friend. He is retired and a fine engineer. Any information with regard to the engine would be most welcome.

Simon (Hurdley)
MT Washington I
Simon,
I believe that you are referring to the first MT Washington built in 1872. It steamed the waters of Lake Winnepesaukee in NH until she burned at the docks at the Weirs in 1939.
The boat that Dale refers to was the paddlewheeler called the S.S. Chateaugay while she steamed the waters of Lake Champlain in VT. The Chateaugay was purchased to replace MT Washington I in 1940. She was transported the 110 miles from Lake Champlain to Lake Winnepesaukee in sections and reassembled and outfitted. She was renamed MT Washington II. Over the years the Mount has been upgraded several times being reclassified from S.S. to M.V. to M.S. I don't believe that she was ever a paddlewheeler. She did have steam engines that were taken by the government for the war efforts. She was later refitted with diesel engines and renamed The Mount Washington. In 1982 she was cut in half and lengthened. She still cruises the waters of Winnepesaukee. It's a beautiful cruise especially in the Fall.

John Fryant also has Model plans for the Original MT Washington.

You may be able to contact one of the Websites that I linked in my messages to find out more about the engine. I'll see what I can do.
Good Luck!
Simon,
Check out my web catalog at http://modelplans.steamboats.org/ It is also listed under the models category on this site. I have plans for the Mt. Washington which include the walking beam engine. They are availabe in two scales : 1/48th and 1/96th.
John,
I referred to your Website in my response. I figured that your plans would have enough details on the Mt Washington engine for Simon to build an accurate model.
There are also at least two commercially available Mt. Washingtons:
