The huge steamboat photo collection, which comprises some 45,000 images, at the Murphy Library (University of Wisconsin - La Crosse) continues to be made available online. When Judy first posted about this in June, the process had just begun. It is GROWING by leaps and bounds!
There are MANY photographs of the steamer AVALON, now the BELLE OF LOUISVILLE, including some dandy pictures of Capts. Ernie Wagner and Doc Hawley in the 1950's. There are also a number of views of the ADMIRAL, MAJESTIC SHOWBOAT, etc. To access the site go to University of Wisconsin Digital Collections and then click on "U" to find the section containing the steamboat images.
A whistle salute to Ralph Du Pae and to the folks at the library for making this fabulous collection available to researchers and steamboat enthusiasts!
Linda Sondreal is the current director/overseer, whatever the title is, of the Steamboat Collection, and she is retiring in the next year or so. This digitalization of the collection is her last big project - a heck of a way to go out in a blaze of glory! As Keith said, we owe a lot to the Murphy for making these photos so available to us.
Amen! I've been checking in there sporaticaly to see what's new that day, and its usually something interesting that I've not seen before.
