Steamboating colleagues:
David Smith, Port Captain for MADISON COAL & SUPPLY, has accepted the position as new editor for the sage S&D REFLECTOR, quarterly journal of the SONS & DAUGHTERS OF PIONEER RIVERMEN. David's writings have added much to WATERWAYS JOURNAL issues. A riverman of 30 years +, his keen eye, mind and pen will further the tradition of the magazine founded by the late Capt. Fred Way and further carried on for fifteen years by Woody Rutter, now retired. Woody's 'Letter From The Editor' in the December issue ended in part with "Apply NOW!"
A word of deep thanks and appreciation for fifteen years of editorship on the REFLECTOR is due Woody Rutter. We welcome David Smith with the knowledge the publication will be in good hands. No doubt a more formal announcement will appear in the next issue. No indication at this time on how or where to contact David with articles, photos, Letters to the Editor etc.
Good luck and best wishes, David. You will have fine support and cooperation from the steamboat family. The torch has been passed to capable hands.
Cheers,
R. Dale Flick
Send any items you'd like to offer for Reflector use to: David K. Smith P.O. Box 1323 Ashland KY 41105-1323. Don't send originals as previous editors haven't returned material and I presume this custom will continue.
Glad Tidings
As Captain Doc Hawley and I were on the phone, just after noon, today, he expressed his concern about who might be taking over as the new editor of the S&D REFLECTOR; at the same time I logged on DotOrg to read him a few postings when I saw the glad tidings from Dale that Capt. David Smith had accepted the role. Cap'n Doc was delighted, and said, "Maybe I'll send him a story, or two."
Good luck to Cap'n Smith. The REFLECTOR certainly means a lot to all of us who eagerly anticipate its arrival every three months, and there is renewed cause for our eagerness now that the precious messenger is under the guiding hand of an experienced riverman and veteran writer.
Hi, Shipyard:
Just read your posting and thanks. Really enjoyed your other postings Re: Dorothea Frye, 'Rat Pack,' and river marker lights. Good stuff there. In fact, I appreciate reading ALL of the postings from our friends on Steamboats.org. Also thanks to Judy for getting David Smith's address. I was digging and fumbling here with no results.
I found an old Black/White photo of the 'Rat Pack' on the old GREENE LINE wharfboat years ago but my computer photo scanner/editor/enhancer needs to be rebooted before I can send to you. Somebody a while back mentioned young Ernie Lee [Capt. Wagner's son] and he appears in this old shot. I'm dumb as mud posting directly to the web postings from home.
Cheers,
R. Dale Flick
I offer my congratulations and support to Captain Smith. I confess I had yearnings to become editor of the Reflector and regret that it did not come to pass. Now, I am delighted that a younger person will take the flag forward. Any and all of my writings are available for Captain Smith to use if he needs them.
Dale,
Thanks for your very kind words! I will strive to meet your expectations, while certainly depending on "support and cooperation" from all. In many ways the REFLECTOR has always been a collective effort, and I look forward to sifting through the contributions from the faithful!
Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
David
David: Congratulations and a barge load of best wishes as you step up to the wheel and take over the S&D REFLECTOR editorship. As a member of S&D for 39 years, the quarterly arrival of the REFLECTOR at my landing has always been a much anticipated event. I've always enjoyed your writings in THE WATERWAYS JOURNAL and look forward to your guidance of the REFLECTOR. Capt. Fred Way would be very proud to know that the magazine will be in good hands. A long and two shorts of the whistle to you!
Thanks Keith!
That means a lot to me since our friendship goes back most of those "39 years"!
Best Wishes,
David
