Has anyone a picture, or a link to one, of the Steamer SWEET CAKE? There is a recording of that boat's sweet-sounding whistle on here, but no picture. Didn't she operate on the Big Sandy River, or in that vicinity? Any help is deemed appreciated.
I googled it
Sam,
Try this out. Learned from a wise captain that the best way to find info on anything is to "google it"

Thank you. That was quick. Google? Now why didn't I think of that?
Sam: that whistle is found on page 221 of the Ohio River Handbook. There are three, single-bell whistles mounted on a "tree". Caption states: From the tow boat SWEET CAKE. Built at Marietta in 1908 as J. M. HUDSON. Boat dismantled in 1929. Whistle found its way to the MARGARET of Louisville, Kentucky, afterwards.
Capn' Walnut
That would be of interest to me too. I would be interested in finding out the type of whistle that was on it.
Thanks for the information. Is there any chance of posting a picture of them? These whistles are known as three bell chimes. Lunkenheimer, Powell and others made them. Lunkenheimer and Powell were both of Cincinnati, but Powell no longer makes whistles.
Fred Way's Steam Towboat Directory, 1954 edition, lists a picture of Sweet Cake No. "T-1411, under way, starboard, aft of broadside, fair." It can probably be bought from the Murphy Library or the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. If you ask politely Woody Rutter may make a print for you. He charges a small fee for doing it.
