Re: Historical Records
Hello. Can anyone give me research guidance on finding information on an Ohio River riverboat pilot from the mid 1800's ? I have been told from 2 separate sources that my Grandfather, Jacob Free (and perhaps George Free ) was a licensed pilot out of Covington, KY or greater Cincinnati in the 1800's. One person (Donald C. Free) has said to have a copy of the license, although I cannot locate him on the Internet to get any further info. I have no idea where to start. My family history is sparse and I want to pass down as much a possible. Thank you very much. [email protected]
Try the Cincinnati Public Library, Special Collections Inland River Library
Thank you, Judy for Inland River Library lead...
I, too, am seeking information about my great grandfather's career as Ohio
River steamboat captain/pilot out of Catlettsburg/Ashland. So, this sounds like a fine reference.
Has the steamboating quarterly, that was introduced at a Galt House river conference in the '70s, been discontinued??
I've just come aboard, determined to learn more about Captain Joseph Lykins, my mother's grandfather. I'd worked on four Great Steamboat Races as media coordinator and with Bonnie Belle, then at port of Madison. That river water does get in the blood, doesn't it? Thank you for any assistance.

Rosemary, the conference to which you refer was in conjunction with a quaterly called the EGREGIOUS STEAMBOAT JOURNAL, published by Mr. Jack Custer of Louisville. It is now defunct. This publication ran for about 2 (?) years in the 1990's.
Capt. David Smith is currently editor of another more established quarterly on river history, the S&D REFLECTOR, published by the Sons & Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen. Perhaps David (who is from the Catlettsburg/Ashland area) can help you in your quest.
Good luck on your search...you are in the right place!
