One of my upcoming "old boat columns" for The Waterways Journal will feature the ill fated steamer SULTANA, which exploded above Memphis in April, 1865 with tremendous loss of life, making it America's worst maritime disaster. I thought it might be of interest that the annual reunion of the Association of Sultana Descendants and Friends will be held on April 27-28 at the Best Western Inn in Florence, Kentucky. The agenda, on the 145th anniversary of the disaster, includes a bus tour with stops along the Cincinnati defensive line across the Ohio River on the outskirts of Covington, Ky. Also to be visited is the site of the Litherbury Shipyard where the SULTANA was built in 1863. The tour will conclude at Camp Dennison, where many Ohio and Indiana men were mustered in and trained for warfare.
Detailed information on the reunion may be obtained from Norman Shaw at [email protected]. Subscription information requests for the newsletter, The Sultana Remembered, should be directed to Ms. Pam Newhouse at [email protected].
