Greetings From New Orleans ,
When I worked on the Steamboats , and regardless of the different positions I served as , Vicksburg , Mississippi was without a doubt one of my favorite stops for any one of a number of different reasons !
Vicksburg , is off the beaten path of the mandatory Southern towns that all the travel agents will tell you that you just have to visit , but then again how often are the so called experts been proven to be wrong !
The next time your pondering on where to spend some quality time for a vacation or to submerse yourself in history or to just get away to recharge your life's batteries , you may consider a sojourn to Vicksburg , Mississippi !
Vicksburg has it all from true and charming Southern Hospitality to Antebellum Homes to a first class Civil War cemetery !
Vicksburg , a true sleepy little southern town just simply reeks with every aspect of what the South was like and what the future also holds for the South !
By visiting Vicksburg , your entire psyche will rejuvenate and when leaving you will have a whole new appreciation for not only this town , this region but the entire country as well !
Vicksburg is truly a living and breathing time machine and a museum of one aspect of this country's deep rooted southern culture !
Don't take my word for it but go to Vicksburg and relive the past !
Smooth Sailing !

Fort Hill Favorite
Vicksburg is all you say, Ted, and more. My favorite place, though, is the Yazoo Canal that has been diverted to run in the former channel of the Mississippi River that did, on its own, what Grant couldn't do, and that was to cut-off the river from running past the Southern guns that studded the loess bluffs of the town.
My first date was with a certain maid from the MISSISSIPPI QUEEN was a rowing excursion on the Yazoo, and we had a memorable time. She also enjoyed V'burg where she and her compatriots from the boat especially enjoyed Fort Hill with its panoramic view of the terrain, below, that was the same as the gunners enjoyed as they watched the Union gunboats queuing up for an opportunity to run the guns that clustered the fort and were primed to rain down death and destruction upon trespassers.

Thanks , Capt. Don !
Greetings From New Orleans ,
Thanks for your input and I appreciate your thoughts on Vicksburg !
I have so many good memories about Vicksburg and one of my most favorite one was when three Lebanese sisters came down and adopted the entire crew of the Str. Delta Queen and in turn we reciprecated and adopted them in any one of a number of ways !
Another fond memory I will always cherish of Vicksburg was when Captain Wagner allowed me to bring my motorcycle on board and believe me there is no way better to tour Vicksburg than on a motorcycle !
Last but certainly not least , one other favorite memory I have of Vicksburg was when the Str. Delta Queen would come into the Yazoo River and to tie off to the Str. Sprague ! I remember the stage shows on the Sprague and just walking the decks of the Sprague and just imagining what it must have been like to have lived and worked on that fine old vessel !
I also remember going up the hill to the Biscuit Company with the crew and just enjoying the camaraderie of a well oiled crew even with the presence of a few engineers as well !!
Vicksburg now has new attractions as well , such as the old Corps of Engineers , M/V Mississippi which is now blocked up and out of the water and open to tourist to inspect ,
Those were certainly good times and now they are good memories !
Some in their youth ran away to join the circus and I ran away to join a steam boat and never looked back !
Smooth Sailing !
