THe Midwest Riverboat Buffs Weekend in LeClaire Iowa is fast approaching. We invite anyone interested in the activities to join us. Friday June 3 I'll be having an open house here with jambalaya and chocolate chip cookies and time for all to look through my steamboat photos and artifacts. On Saturday June 4 we'll gather at the LONE STAR/Buffalo Bill Museum at 9AM to examine this last steam sternwheel towboat to run on the UMR. At noon we'll move upriver a notch and ride an active boat, the TWILIGHT. She's making some 1.5 hour trips because the American Pickers Festival is that day too. After the TWILIGHT ride, there are several options: tour the new Mississippi River Distillery; take the self-guided walking tour of the Rapids Pilots' homes; drive down to the L&D 14 complex which includes the old locks now used for recreational boats, the active lock, and the Corps repair yard; go visit and relax in our meeting room at the Comfort Inn and Suites; or even do some of the Pickers activities. At 5:30 we'll have dinner at the riverfront Bierstube, after which we'll adjourn to the Comfort Inn meeting room to hear Capt. Glenn Johnson, the last Captain of the LONE STAR. We'll conclude the evening with some socializing and snacks. On Sunday morning there will be donuts on the levee for those who wish to watch the TWILIGHT start out on her two day cruise at 8:30. If you'd like any more information, email me: [email protected]. The more, the merrier!
Hi Judy
It is a long way from my mountain retreat to the lone Star and I an all ready booked for that time slot. I have a National trails meeting and one of those mean medical check ups.
And this morning I woke up to snow on the ground. All gone on the valley floor by noon but 2 feet fell in the last couple of days in the higher mountains. or about 17 plus feet for the season. We are expecting a little flooding too when this all melts.
Carl
Hi Judy, I have a friend and his wife from Louisiana coming up for a visit that week-end. We affectionately call him "Bayou Bob". I think it would be fun for us to join you and the Buff's for Saturday's agenda if there's still room for a few more. I sent you an e-mail regarding this also. Thanks for the notice.
Next weekend's gathering
It looks like we'll be around 40 for the weekend, with 30 or so riding the TWILIGHT at noon. There's room for more, so whether you're a member of the Buffs or not, if you're in the area please join us. If you'd like to stop by here on Friday night for some jambalaya, Planters Punch, and a wander around the Middle Upper Mississippi River Museum and need directions, email me: [email protected] Our Buffs gatherings are always casual low-key times, no inflated egos in the bunch. Hope to see a few new faces next weekend on both ends of the Rock Island Rapids...
