MMA Talk to Focus on Marine Accident Investigation
THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 2011 AT 12:00 AM
CASTINE — Maine Maritime Academy will host an upcoming presentation on the post-investigation findings of the May 2007 marine incident involving the Empress of the North, a 360-foot riverboat style cruise ship that ran aground off the coast of Alaska. The presentation is set for Wednesday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in the Harborview Room of the college’s Harold Alfond Student Center.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) senior marine accident investigators Brian Curtis, MMA Class of 1981, and Captain Robbie Jones, MMA Class of 1980, participated in the investigation. Their presentation will include an overview of the role of the NTSB and a brief about the incident and the final report. They will conclude the session with an open question and answer period.
The NTSB investigators will be on campus to conduct a one-day seminar on marine accident investigation for members of the Maine Pilotage Commission.
Forgot to mention that this event will be held at Maine Maritime Academy Harold Alfond Student Center in Bangor, Maine. If anyone is close to the area, might not be a bad presentation to check out.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any pertinent information about the Empress of the North's sale from MARAD at this time. Has anyone found out if she is in India or not?
Maine Maritime Academy
As an aside, this is where Matt Dow is a student - I would guess he'll attend and give us a report.
If anyone is planning to attend, please note the Harold Alfond Student Center is not in Bangor. It's on the campus of Maine Maritime, which is in Castine, Maine - about 40 miles from Bangor.
Should be an interesting evening, presented by true professionals.
I am not one of those, so such a night featuring me would be very short and go like this, "Amercan West Steamboat Company, in its typical short money style, had an unqualified kid driving the boat and he hit a rock. Questions?"
Explanation
Paul, could you quit being so verbose and get to the point?
While what you say is true....it goes a lot deeper than that. There seems to have been a culture within that organization which showed a total disregard for proper operating procedures....starting with the Captain and the Second Officer (Navigation officer). Just sayin

Geeez, Judy, I don't know. Sometimes it takes more verbosity to get to the point. :O)

There is a Yiddish saying that goes, a rotting fish stinks from the mouth. MAL did indeed stink from the top down.
