Hi all,
I finally found the TV show I used to watch as a little kid, which probably got me interested in steamboats. For Christmas we recieved the 44 episode DVD set. What boat was used & where was the "river" filming done? Models?
The Staterooms are, of course, way too large and the engine room looks too narrow, but the engines look real, as does the opening shot of the wheel. However, I notice welded pipe railings, and other details that don't seem right.
Still, neat to watch again!

The "Steamer" Enterprise
David: The ENTERPRISE was used on a Hollywood lot for the filming of the 1959 series starring Darren McGavin and Burt Reynolds. It later made cameo appearances in other movies. A friend who was formerly an animator for Disney said the sternwheeler eventually rotted down and was scrapped.
A well illustrated and informative book entitled Riverboat, The Evolution of a Television Series, was published in 2009 by S.A. Kotar and J.E. Gessler. It's available on Amazon and Ebay.
Thanks Keith, I have ordered the book. I wonder if that was the steamboat in a lagoon that I saw back in 1974 on a Universal Studios tour? There was also a steam locomotive, that I believe was the Nevada County Narrow Gauge engine that is now back in Grass Valley, close to the original right of way of the NCNG (also known as the "Never Come, Never Go"--one story was that a pregnant woman asked the conductor, "When do we get to Nevada City, I think my baby is about to arrive!" "Madam, you should not have gotten on the train in Colfax in this condition!" "Sir, I wasn't IN this condition when I got on the train!" (Colfax & Nevada City are about 20 miles apart) ).
Disappointing that nothing is left & that nothing was actually "real;" although I suspect the engines and wheel were at least functional. Maybe I'll know more when I read the book!
S'teamcerely

Riverboat DVDs
A few of the episodes have found their way onto YouTube. I also received the entire DVD set for Christmas and I am enjoying it.
The Hollywood boat used in the link above is also the same boat used in the movie "Four for Texas" staring Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. In that movie her name was SULTANA until renamed MAISON ROUGE. It's available on Netflix, but I wouldn't rush out to get it. The closeup shots in the movie show that she has a chain driven wheel.

Actually, I thought parts of the movie were hilarious, especially Joey Bishop as an Indian. Priceless, light entertainment.
